Semi Official Comments On 360 Rumors

With all the info/rumors flying around about shortages and overheating 360s, Microsoft's John Porcaro has taken upon himself the task of separating facts from fiction. The info below is taken from his personal blog johnporcaro.com.

Recall Rumors are 100% False: The nastiest RUMOR that’s making the rounds is that Microsoft is going to do some sort of a recall of the Xbox 360.  Several forum threads I’ve seen are talking about folks going into retailers, only to be told that there will be no more units coming because of a Microsoft recall.  NOT TRUE!   If you're told this by a retailer, let me know.

Replenishment Units Are On The Ground: Also, there are reports of some retailers saying they won’t have units for weeks or months.  Also not true (in most cases).  My theory is that some people might be tired of the constant calls, so they’ve made something up to get people to quit calling.  We are shipping units constantly (we have chartered 747’s regularly flying in with units).  Some retailers have a backorder wait list, and might not have units that will be on shelf for some time, and some retailers might allocate more units to one store over another, but all stores that have placed orders are getting replenishments regularly.

In fact, we have confirmation that units are on the ground and on their way to retailers this week.  When those will go from our warehouses to retailer warehouses, then to retailer locations is largely up to those retailers, so there’s no easy way to say which store will get product on which day.  You should call your local retailer to find out. We remain on track to ship 2.75 to 3.0 million consoles in the first 90 days.

Hardware Replacements in as Few as 5-7 Days: I saw a couple of posts where people with problems were postponing calling 800-4MYXBOX.  Not sure if it’s because of long wait times (now the rush of launch is beginning to die down, those are diminishing), or that they think they might be weeks without a console.  Truth is that we’re turning around replacement/repaired units extremely quickly, in as few as 5-7 business days.  Our support reps have been trained to troubleshoot your problems over the phone.  When a return is necessary, we overnight a prepaid box to you, which allows you to overnight your console back to us.  In most cases, we troubleshoot/repair/replace your Xbox 360 in 1-2 days, and we overnight it back.  We planned for world-class customer satisfaction, and have plenty of consoles, parts, and trained employees to handle the volume.

We're Not Holding Back: I’m continue to see comments/questions about Microsoft holding back inventory to keep the price inflated/keep hype going.  We have shipped every console we’ve made, and we’re making more as fast as we can.  Fact is, there is significantly more demand than supply, and will be for some time.  We’re all gamers, and we all understand how frustrating it is to wait.  We’re doing all we can to get Xbox 360 controllers into the hands of those that have waited so long.  But believe me when I say, we aren't holding units, and we're not creating hype for hype's sake.  There's no good economic justification for that (but that's the subject for another blog post...).

I'm glad to see a semi-official comment on the rumors. That said, where's my 360? You said you don't know when they will actually arrivie on shelves due to shipping, etc. but how many are coming into the US and when? "Weekly shipments" was a lie, because a week has come and gone, so give it to us straight: Does _anyone_ know?

i have just been into the shop where i have pre ordered my xbox 360, and told that due to microsofts shipping, they have messed it all up and only shipped over a mineute amount of main system consoles and loads of core systems. I am paying £354 for this console and they are not coming up with the goods. I am highly disappointed. I have been looking forward to tomorrow so much, but looks like im going to be waiting longer than that.

Every single day this week i have gone to my local retailers i mean all of them ,and all they say is january why don't they even communicate with the people that buy there products .I understand there frustration with people asking the same question every day but it's really frustrating to us the consumers who i myself have spent well over 10,000 dollars on microsoft products and it makes me upset that i don't even know the next day i'll be able to have a chance at getting my hands on one . I don't want to buy one off the internet auctions . I just want to let off a little steam that's been building up fo two weeks.

Why wait for a premium? I just figured out you can actually SAVE some money if you get a core and an external hard drive with USB 2.0 (see other news on this site for how to use that, http://llamma.com/xbox360/mods/USB%20Hard%20Drive%20Mod.htm, it's apparently even more useful than the one microsoft ships); you can get a 20 gb external HD for 40 bucks on ebay! Now if only all the retailers around here weren't out of the core system, too, I'd be all set :).

Here are the prices amended for the external HD:
Core:
299
+ 40 for HD
+ 10 (difference between wired and wireless)
+ 30 for component cable if you have HD
+ 20 for headset

= 399 bucks! just as much as the premium, and if you're one of the unfortunate masses, like me, who don't have 800+ bucks to spend on a new TV, you can take out the 30 dollars for the component cable, for a total of $369. Not too shabby, eh? Of course, this is all assuming that you can still use the external hard drive for save files and live content... Haven't seen anything about that, does anyone know?

Just went in to the local Gamestop. The man in the line in front of me asked if he could pre-order the new xbox 360 his kid told him about. The cashier just gave him "The Look" and told him of the 75 pre-orders that would be filled before him. But that they were still taking preorders for the weekly shipments.
It is a sad Thursday in xbox world for many of us.
I asked if they knew when their next shipment would be in. Our store received 10 systems, I was number 11. Pre-ordered 7 months ago, still waiting.
The guy told me that microsoft is still handling all the broken systems, and might even have a massive recall.
Why are the stores promulgating this to everyone? Worse yet, when will the pre-order madness stop?
Anyway, I'm still next....in...line.

6 - why preorder
Unregistered - ryan 12.01.2005 22:35
What really is the point of pre-ordering? If anyone has a good guess be my friend and tell me. I as most of you pre-ordered the xbox360 premuim. In may, i was told then that there would be a surplus of xboxes to go around. So why create a hype you cant control. Unfortunately none of us can say subjectively that it is worth it to pre-order something. Not to mention pre- in pre order would suggest before meaning before the original release date. So why pre-order.

7 - stop crying !!!!!!!!!!
Unregistered - smarty pants 12.02.2005 01:50
Why did you guys wait so long to pre-order. I did it back in May and guess what I got my 360 on the 22 of Nov. To bad loosers. Next time don't wait so long long. You know what they say about the early bird.

8 - Big deal !
Unregistered - Ashton Blake 12.02.2005 02:32
Don't be surpise if your Xbox360 crashes, then we will see who got the last laugh.

9 - WHEN!!!!!
Unregistered - lumpy 12.02.2005 08:43
When will they be in stores again no one seems to know I heard that maybe on the 18th Bestbuy will get some. The guy there told me to buy a warm coat indicating long lines. How much are space heaters?

But the real question is WHEN WILL STORES GET THEM AGAIN? Come on semi- official statement guy let us know.

10 - Your great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As long as I can laugh now I'm okay. And hey don't hate on me because you don't have a 360. Now if money is keeping you from getting one then that's not funny. Now if you waited untill like Sept. to pre-order then that is funny. BTW I have a 4 year warranty so I don't worry about stuff like that. Gotta go game now PDZ,COD2, lets go.

12 - ethernet cables??????????????
Unregistered - sack of dirt 12.02.2005 22:15
How long is the ethernet cable provided with the premium system? and is it better to plug the 360 into a power strip instead of directly into the wall and why?

13 - worth the wait?
Unregistered - 360 fan 12.03.2005 06:14
I didn't pre-order a 360 because i wasn't sure if i wanted a 360 or another console UNTIL i saw some kid play COD2 on a 360 in the store. the graphics amazed me and opened my mind there and then. pre-ordered or not i know it will be worth the wait. stop complaining and be patient. i'll keep checking the stores until i get one and when i do.....

14 - Your not an xbox fan are you
Unregistered - jb 12.04.2005 11:34
For us that we religous about getting in early and doing our pre order we have the right to btch. What are you talking about. How can you even have the right to say stop conplaining or what ever. You don't even diserve one spanky.

I checked my gamestop today. The cashier told me that they were told that they are getting more units in on the 13th. Can anyone confirm this?

16 - launch date
Unregistered - frog 12.04.2005 19:24
erm why launch when you cant satisfy even close to 1/3 of the immediate demmand? they should have pushed the launch back and saved all this hassle, maybe they could have had a stronger launch lineup (as well as more customers). Ordered mine in november (uk) and ill prolly get it close 2 my birthday (febuary). Surely making the christmas rush is irrelevant if you dont have the stock to take advantage of it?

I saw in the december edition of game informer mag that Elder scrolls four will come in december sixth... So my guess is...

If anyone is lucky the 360 will be in on the sixth... What a perfect way to market

20 - People are trying so hard to ruin the 360. Why?
omegaheat 12.05.2005 03:18
I understand some of the angry comments from you guys, but is this not what we all wanted. If the Xbox360 wasn't selling too well, we'd all be complaining right now about how everybody's sleeping on this great console. The more demand and the better our console sells, the more development support, and the more development support, then the larger selection of games for us. Those Japanese developers won't be able to use the excuse of a small installed base for the reason that their best games aren't on our western console. Hell, I can't even think of a reason why Capcom developed Resident Evil4 for the Gamecube and Playstation2, but they left the Xbox1 out. Everybody knows that if that game had been ported to the Xbox1, it would have kicked ass. I personally don't care for the developers like Capcom, Konami, Sega, Namco, and Square anymore. The Xbox1 had some great games, and I can't think of one title from either of those developers that were a must have. Capcom gave us Megaman 2D games, but no Resident Evil. Konami gave us Ninja Turtles (huh), but no Metal Gear Solid3. Sega gave us Sonic and other mediocre games, but no Virtua Fighter titles. Namco gave us Namco Museums and that piece of $h!t game "Breakdown", but no Tekken. And as for Square, um nothing at all. I played some of the greatest titles ever on my Xbox1, and I lived. We all did. My point is, Microsoft gave us a great system and are continuing to make things even better with the Xbox360. If they can't make enough consoles to meet the demand, then congradulate them on their success. No one could have predicted this much frenzy.

He's right... D*** right. We should all hold hands and cry together. I'm sorry I let you down, 360... Wait what am I saying...

If I'm here in this room complaining about stuff, it's because I'm EXCITED!!!! We all want the dayam stupid system to work right because we know it will be so much better than anything else... And kanomi does suck have you ever heard of mystical ninja? I'm gonna go hang myself. I'll be back in an hour though to piss someone off.

22 - something to consider
Unregistered - dshot22 12.09.2005 14:26
Hey this is just an idea. Why don't you just wait till say summer of 2006 so that the crashes won't happen to yours. (because the xbox 360's are crashing because they are the first batch. remember the first batch of ps3 and xbox's) they also crashed but if u buy one now they won't. so thats what i am going to do; just wait till summer or x-mas of 06.

23 - Still Nothing
