Seems like MS’s viral marketing team is back to work, with a new mysterious website called Origamiproject.com. The website follows the same style as the Origen Xbox 360 website; it doesn’t make much sense, and it will change over time revealing new info.
The word Origami literally means "paper folding" in Japanese and refers to all types of paper folding, even those of non-Japanese origin. The goal of this art is to create a given result using geometric folds and crease patterns. Visit http://www.origamiproject.com to view the siteA quick look up in the “Who Is” database shows that the website is registered by Microsoft and hosted on a MS server. If this site will reveal anything exciting is another question, let’s hope it will. According to the tech site Engadget, the Origami Project is the code name for a new kind of portable device. ![]() ![]() Add Comment Unregistered - your name here 02.25.2006 09:29 WHO CARES!!!! Unregistered - xXGRUNT284Xx 02.25.2006 13:41 I think it's to do with a new portable device being developed by M$. I think it means that they are making something that may be folded up to move around. I say this also because MS say they were interested in the portable gaming, media etc market. They would also want to create a better version of the Sony PSP. asdf 02.25.2006 14:13 whatever it is is probably europe only, like origen, given the date format (I assume that Microsoft, being an American company, would default to American date style if it were something global). Unregistered - E 02.25.2006 14:33 We all know that MS is developing some kind of portable device. But I remember reading something about them not putting the xbox name into it so they can draw a larger crowd. They said it would play games and it would be an ipod and PSP killer. ...Hopefully Unregistered - DUDE 02.25.2006 14:50 IM HAPPY WITH THE 360 Unregistered - ? 02.25.2006 15:09 believe me , you WILL want one.................... remoteXimpaler 02.25.2006 15:13 personally, im pretty excited if microsoft is making a portable game device i think it could be really cool. i kinda want a PSP and a DS but there arent that many cool games so who knows this will be something ill be checking more into later in the future happy gaming everyone!! -remote Unregistered - Absurd Aphid 02.25.2006 16:22 You can tell that it is a portable device judging by the part that pops up and says "...and where I can go?" I just hope that if MS releases a portable that it will be affordable and amazing. PSP is pretty cool but it doesnt have any games that interest me. DS is fun and innovative but still, it doesnt have many good games and the graphics arent the greatest Unregistered - Your Name 02.25.2006 16:39 Its gonna be a laptop Red 02.25.2006 17:34 Its gonna be an apology for the Origen fiasco Unregistered - CT 02.25.2006 18:45 To #17... I'm not entirely sure the "...and where I can go?" comment necessarily means its a handheld... Don't forget, Microsofts motto for a great while was "Where do you want to go today?" so I'm wagering this being something about Vista instead... Thats what I guess... LAGIZZTIC 02.25.2006 20:11 Nov. 11, 2001 Las Vegas, NV; COMDEX -- (press release excerpt) -- National Semiconductor Corporation today unveiled a new handheld conceptual device that integrates today's most popular Internet and multimedia functions into a single, portable unit. About the size and weight of a small digital camcorder, the National Geode Origami Mobile Communicator is a flexible unit that folds and unfolds to perform eight popular consumer electronics functions in one easy-to-use device. The Geode Origami Mobile Communicator is a proof-of-concept device for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), developed under a joint agreement between National Semiconductor's Conceptual Products Group, Studio RED Inc., and CoCom International, Ltd. Measuring just 7.5 inches long, less than 4 inches wide, 1.5 inches thick and weighing about 10 ounces, Origami's flexible form factor reflects its multiple uses. The Origami folds and pivots into a digital camera, video camcorder, smartphone, MP3 audio player, PDA, Internet access or Internet picture frame, email device or video conferencing terminal. Origami utilizes Bluetooth wireless technology for network connectivity. PAN and LAN networks use a Bluetooth-equipped access point, while WAN uses a Bluetooth GSM or CDMA phone. Origami can also be scaled for future 2.5 and 3G cellular networks such as GPRS and W-CDMA. (Click here for a detailed, larger image). The device runs Microsoft Windows Embedded XP and leverages the broad array of applications already available for that platform -- applications such as NetMeeting for videoconferencing, Internet Explorer 6.0 for browsing and Windows Media Player. Studio RED, Inc., a Silicon Valley product development firm, has designed and engineered high-tech consumer products for almost 20 years. National approached Studio RED to create the industrial design for its revolutionary Origami prototype. CoCom International, Ltd., a worldwide leader in the design and manufacture of a wide range of products and services for business and personal use, completed the manufacturing process by combining the silicon content from National with the industrial design from Studio RED. National's award-winning, high performance, low power Geode SC3200 processor is at the heart of Origami. This processor features integrated, high-end video graphics and full 16-bit stereo audio that offers the optimal balance between cost, performance and power consumption, enabling manufacturers to build affordable, full-function devices. National's analog technology brings the Geode Origami Mobile Communicator to life with sound powered by National's Boomer audio products, a display enhanced by National's LVDS technology, power management products that prolong battery life while increasing portability, and temperature sensors that monitor and maintain overall system health. Origami is also designed to take full advantage of the complete range of features of National's Wireless Solutions Bluetooth Compact Flash card. Origami is the latest in a series of industry-shaping products National has introduced at COMDEX Fall. In 1998, the company unveiled the WebPAD device, which spawned a new category of products: information appliances. Last year, National received the 'Best of Show' award in the services category for its Geode WebPAD Metro, a wide-area mobile personal access device. National named its new Origami device after the Japanese art of folding paper into birds, animals or other artistic shapes this is info i gathered through research weather this is it or just speculation i'll find out just like everyone else I hope it's a portable xbox360 game machine as well who knows? Unregistered - Bill 02.25.2006 20:55 It's the camera. Nothing special. Just another huge viral letdown from Microsoft. Again...just the camera. Alternatively though, at least they are teasing us. Sony on the other hand, thinks they are too good to clue anyone in on their ideas. So just wait... Lets not let Origen happen again... But, I definitly hope Microsoft puts their heart more into 360 right now. Chimera 02.26.2006 05:57 i thought it was the american date style: 3.2.06 "2 march 06" cos weve had the 3rd of Feb lol. or am i bein dumb Trickedbullet 02.26.2006 09:33 I bet you it is the actual name of the device. I believe that Microsoft should use the Xbox name with it. Why Not? All the sony fanboys wont buy it simply because the word Microsoft will be embedded on it somewhere, and everyone else who doesn't have an xbox or xbox 360 wont really care that it had an xbox name. Or maybe it is just like the sony ps2 remake that made the ps2 shrink down. The 360 already is small but the weight is only slightly lighter than the xbox (Xbox 8.3 pounds, Xbox 360 7.7 pounds). The power cable to it also is massive. You could knock somebody out with it and pound holes in the walls. Maybe this device lightens the 360 and shrinks that beast of a power converter. It could also be a computer loaded with goodies and sold by microsoft. Or maybe it is really just a giant piece of paper. Or a death ray gun. Or a shark with laser beam stuck to it head. Or a anti-Playstation defence weapon. Or more likey....................................ALL OF THE ABOVE!!!!!!YES!!!! Unregistered - psp360 02.26.2006 10:51 I think its pointing straight at the portable xbox. assuming this site is an Xbox one of course. It's very possible that its just a Microsoft handheld device that has nothing to do with the Xbox. But to me the whole Viral marketing strategy, seems to go hand in hand pretty well with what we've seen with the Xbox and 360 so far. I dont believe the "touch me" thing is relevant to the product at all, I think it was just there to start the video. Unregistered - tjy 02.26.2006 12:01 I dont think it should carry the xbox name, presuming it is a handheld. It was called xbox cause it was the first console to use Direct x (DIRECT XBOX). I dont think a handheld would use Direct x. If the market of asia does not seem interested in the xbox369 for now...why in the hell does microsoft want to keep sending some xbox there while here we have a clear shortage of the rig in north america....it does not make sense to send xbox`s in japan or asia and they sit on the shelves while here we have to run around to get premium bundles and everybody is sold out... is microsoft stupid or what....get the product where it is gonna sell first then worry about the sensitive markets...microsoft is so hell bent on trying to beat sony`s ps3 that they are shafting themselves with their real americain customers!!!!! what makes you think that handheld would work... Unregistered - Hello... 02.26.2006 16:20 All i can say is that you have missed the obvious, origami = japan. This is simply something off microsoft to enter the japanese market to improve the 360 sales, before the ps3 emerges. There have been lots of articles on microsoft entering the japanese market and to name it origamiproject, well u can see what i'm gettin at. Unregistered - greenrabbit 02.26.2006 16:54 wow, you guys and girls do realise this is not a part of the microsoft game stuidos or xbox360 marketing team right? as in xbox360 has nothing to do with this right? as in stop say xbox360 needs more games before this comes out because they are not the same division of microsoft, one is microsoft xbox, and the other is microsoft pc. And your complaining about receiving somthing new into the technology market...because somthing else doesnt meet your needs yet, how is somthing new going to affect your 360 and the over 150 announced games for it? it wont, because microsoft does a total of 10 % of the developing, they are a publisher for the most part. Good going on not goin good Unregistered - zcf 02.26.2006 17:28 Blimey, you know lots dont you. skooby 02.26.2006 19:04 Exactly... I still can't go into Walmart/Best Buy/Gamestop and pick up a 360. Until that happens, who cares what other gadgets and in the pipeline. Good observations :) Unregistered - Your Momma 02.26.2006 20:19 I personally think a portable.. pulsating.. vibrating.. self-secreeting.. self-cleaning.. highly customizable vagina would be far more entertaining than anything MS (or Sony) could thunk up. It could still be live enabled.. with acheivements (cumtacular even!!).. Downloadable content? Of course! Pop on over to the marketplace and download yourself a ghonneria demo! If you don't like that burning sensation? It'll only cost you 10,000 points to download the cure! ..oh wait, there is no cure. Although at this point it would be an MS product... because you would be doubled over by the pain from the cox lodged in your ass by the cluster phuck that ol' Billy Gates and Steven Balmer just performed on you. BUT, Just wait until V2!! When it "should" stop freezing, and you "might" finally reach that orgasm you payed $400+ to get... Unregistered - The Man 02.26.2006 21:57 Its a portable Computer device http://kevintwodotoh.com/2006/02/25/hardware/origami-video-the-real-deal.html Unregistered - boba 02.26.2006 22:12 we already know what it is Unregistered - YomasterXBL 02.27.2006 00:14 I'd say it's just an announcement for Japan. Since Origami is Japanese and M$ can't get the Japs to buy anything labeled with "XBox 360." Probably just some kind of "Jap Attractor" so that M$ can make some(More)cash. Unregistered - YomasterXBL 02.27.2006 00:16 All of us Halo fans know that the only awesome website like this was www.ilovebees.com. That was the most awesome ARG ever. BEST. ARG. EVER. Unregistered - Michael 02.27.2006 09:57 If you go on the website, when it says what can I do, the third image of that golden sphere is clearly a symbol of xbox live. PAUL CERULA 02.27.2006 10:48 #46, the xbox live symbol that's very possible but I think this is a very mobile laptop/PDA. Think about how much MS is doing with their new VISTA. Gaming is handled in my eyes. A mobile MS unit is still to be found so that's what I think it is. Yeah it'll probably have a lot of connectivity and options with the 360, more than psp. Gamertag crap and stuff. Videos, music, blah blah..... It's exciting that MS is finally going to make an attempt to be more like Apple with Vista and this. skooby 02.27.2006 10:58 Digital Kitchen removed their link to MS Oragami thinger. Must have touched a nerve with someone... FamoAmo 02.27.2006 12:48 Paul I think your right its portable but I bet it can connect to the 360 and who knows you might be able to play 360 stuff at work or something..Who knows All I know is it will probably kick major ass but cost another pretty penny!!! JsonHenry 02.27.2006 14:06 Finally we have figured out why Microsoft bought all of those ARM-9 variation processors a year or so ago. I remember reading an article about that a while back on Anandtech. Unregistered - LilClaw 02.27.2006 16:11 Have you guys notice that the advertisment was pulled from the d-kitchen site. Humm, perhaps Microsoft got mad that it was shown prematurely. The device looks alright. I know it's viewable elsewhere as well, but it's strange that the Microsoft section isn't there anymore (besides the Xbox section). Anyways I'm wonding about what can it do that the PSP can't? And will it be worth it?
