The Origami Project : Update

A flash film has emerged showing the different functionalities of this thing. What we see in this video is supposedly a year old prototype so keep that in mind. But if the final thing looks anything like that, Sony and Nintendo should have little to fear, even though it can play games as shown in the commercial. This looks more like some kind of a big ass PDA / “lifestyle portable device”.  Hopefully the final thing will have some Xbox 360 related features as well.

4 - hmm interesting
Unregistered - blah 02.27.2006 13:27
well it seems that M$ is going to enter the handheld market, but by the looks of it they arnt really looking at games as a first with this, they basically want a computer in your hands, it has a mouse (touch screen) keyboard, it basically has alot of programs and features of a computer, it is like well we did it, a computer in your hands. OH did wee mention it plays xbox games :)

ploody 02.27.2006 13:28
what can you do with a psp, play games
what can you do with this, everything

6 - its a brick
Unregistered - dude 02.27.2006 13:30
i am not a sony lover or a sony supporter but that thing is huge the psp has a really nice design its small and cool that thing you cound nt even fit in you pocket its nearly 3 times as big as a gameboy which are rubbish but its about 10 years old so y would you buy a brick that probaly costs twice as mush as a psp

7 - not really a sony killer
Unregistered - blah 02.27.2006 13:31
the only way i think it will kill sony is if it comes at a the same or lower price point of a PSP,

if it cost as much as a 360 then you know id rather just buy a new computer then have that small thing.

it needs to be affordable to penetrate the hanndheld market,

8 - in repsonse to six
Unregistered - blah 02.27.2006 13:33
its i said this before i think its not directly a handheld game machine, i think gaming is a side point for it,

it seems thay are trying to launch it as a computer, which basically it is, so that size for a portable computer (smaller than laptop) is pretty good.

but if they are directly triyng to penetrate the handheld gaming market that wont go so well if it cost alot and its so big

9 - number 8
Unregistered - dude 02.27.2006 13:38
i think your right but im guessing if its got a gps in it will cost atleast a thousand pounds

10 - response to 9
Unregistered - blah 02.27.2006 13:40
yeah with a GPS it looks to be costing alot thats why it will be smarter to advertise it as a advance small computer than a game machine

if everyhting goes well, i wouldnt doubt this design could replace laptops

15 - Advice for Microsoft
Unregistered - The one 02.27.2006 15:16
I have no problem with how that device looks but the buttons for playing games seem too small and like they'll make your fingertips hurt after a while. It should have regular sized d-pad like the ds and buttons the same as a controller except without the fruity colors because this device needs to have a more sophisticated bussinesslike look to it.

that video is a year old though. the newest version is probably well better

18 - to big
Unregistered - crazy gamer 02.27.2006 15:57
I hope that big ass thing is only a prototype because it looks like sh%t i need something that will fit in my pocket. Come on MS make it happen show me the true ipod-psp killer.

19 -
Unregistered - Tsuikyuu 02.27.2006 16:31
Is it me or is that Halo on the screen

20 - It IS a computer
Unregistered - Major Friend 02.27.2006 20:15
All this is is a small computer. It IS not a gaming macine. You will notice is running several windows applications, MSN messenger, Window Media Center, Internet explorer etc. It also does show Halo, however that is the PC version as the xbox version does not have online multi-player.

This looks really cool, but its not a PSP I-pod killer. It looks here like it is designed to combat laptops and not those smaller devices. I definately want one of these, but I wonder if Microsoft is making two handheld devices due to the size.

21 -
Unregistered - Keitaro 02.27.2006 21:39
Oh My God man!!! I have to get me one of those... I love it, don't care about the size.. I'm in loooooooooove!

Sweet music btw :)

22 - ummmmm.
Unregistered - p h fat 02.27.2006 23:18
are you all thick ? its a year old prototype it says it in the article !
read it you silly people !
i would think it will be much smaller now due to new batteries, small hard drves, (if it doesn't have one it should as it should play xbox games and to do that it would need a dvd drive and emulation on hard drive or entire xbox games downloaded to a hard drive.) and because screen resolution is so high now the screen can be much smaller and still do small text operations like internet and email. and to those who dont know you can get very small laptops with alot more power than an xbox now so i doubt they are ggoing to take on the laptop market.

PSP + Tablet PC = MS new handheld, friggen sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

PAUL CERULA 02.28.2006 01:18

Okay some hate the size, what you don't realize is that this isn't a primary gaming machine. It's an all in one Mini laptop with handheld features. Windows Vista probably in an entirely different format.

This could be something that could play xbox 1 level graphics, and boy if it does this thing will sell big time even if you only have a couple best sellers like halo and GTA.

Also this would probably be a revamped vista touchscreen. You think you want to type word processing or watch movies with a PSP screen size. I'm not going to bother with a PSP because gaming in a car, instead of "talking" or "being "interesting" is a lot more worth 300 bucks of ps2 graphics. Now for 400, you get most of the laptop functions plus gaming. That's worth it. Also notice that this would be entirely dependant on internet downloaded content....hense(billy recently proclaiming that's the future)

I'll tell you what if MS can pull off all of these features your going to see this thing sell and demand big time. This could be the one really great thing MS does for the market.

All I here people saying is that this device will not be enough to compete with the PSP. That is ridiculous. The PSP is a complete waste of money to my generation. I am 30 and carry around enough things on a daily basis to want to carry another device (think PSP) that is too small to do anything well and too big to be convienient to carry. Additionally I don't believe that the PSP is much of a draw to anyone except those in college or younger. I for one would love this device as it is large enough to do a crap load of things. Actually it can pretty much do everything that your pc can. Most importantantly it is large enough to actually play a wide variety of games on. So since this thing can replace my planner (being roughly the same size) and add a whole lot of functionality including providing the right sized format for games I will have a reason to buy it. And I think that it will appeal to a wider audience that the psp does not cater to.

27 - PSP KILLER
Unregistered - ezlife 02.28.2006 11:03
the psp sucks ass , who the hell wants to pay 20 bucks for a movie and then watch it on a 5 inch screen. i fell into the psp hype and bought one on launch and trade that junk 2 weeks later for a dirt bike.M$ has hit nail on the head with this one

28 - I dont kno if anyones already said this but..
sparco 02.28.2006 11:23
The game you see being played on it was Halo 1. HALO 1 IS ON THE PC! So maybe it doesnt play xbox games, but just PC games =)

I couldn't really tell, but what did the magazine say the man was reading on the lawn chair, the magazine with the mountains in the backgound, I thought it said "Ditch your Xbox" but couldnt make it out clear.

Unregistered - Gill Bates 02.28.2006 14:03
Hey you think that thing can emulate DS games? Game Over DS.

32 - OMG
Unregistered - firecracker 02.28.2006 15:21
Universal connectivity! If that box can connect with the things shown in that video it will have everything beat. Imagine connencting to you windows media centre to watch a video, then opening the 360 to play a game, put photo's from camera's straight onto the 'origami' for editing.
I just hope the size goes down a bit.

33 - MS has a plan so theres know reason to bash others!
Unregistered - ee 02.28.2006 15:56
This might be something to look forward to but what's up with all this psp ds bashing! I will never buy anything Sony or Nintendo unless they change the game the same way MS has in my own opinion! Have any of u guys ever noticed how MS never really bashes and how at every E3 or interview Sony always trash talks? We should all take this approach and not bash because we have the upper hand as far as better games and online services go! The other guys know this and we know this so there is know reason to bash or brag! Also two years ago at E3 J.Allard mentioned always staying connected to your game online no matter where you are and talked about Vanguard and games that would allow you to play key roles in a massive environments from your PC Xbox or portable devices! I can't wait to see how they r going to keep us connected and this must have something to do with there plans given its also a some what pc!

You know there's already such a thing as a portable PC... IT's CALLED A F,CKING LAPTOP YOU F,CKERS!

36 -
Vivicious 02.28.2006 19:38
It's a tablet PC (Nothing like a laptop by the way, unless you mean Toshiba's mini laptop which costs SEVERAL thousand dollars), not a handheld gaming device. Games will be as important to this thing, as they are to mobile phones.

Anyway, if the rumours are true (less than 500 grams, UNDER 800 dollars, etc.) this would be pretty amazing, I just don't see how they will be able to get the price so low.

37 - check it
Unregistered - jules 02.28.2006 20:15
psps are ok...not gameboy great...but ok...worth $250? no way... sony once mighty is getting challenged on both ends console and portable...sucks for them...this origami stuff looks cool looks expensive but i can see m$ taking a loss on price to get a good product out...it would trump the psp on the high end digital savy customer...thanks to whoever said "who wants to pay $20 for a movie to watch it on a 5inch screen" i feel ya...back to folding paper halo on the go i would kill my-self walking into traffic trying to get the last grunt...if sony can put a ps2 into portable form M$ could put an xbox into portable form...did i say halo on the go...oh yeah....folding paper can be fun...

Eh, I already have a laptop that's plenty portable for me. I rarely find the need to be jogging while I game, and I'd never pull out a PSP on the subway, so JUST HOW portable do I really need my gaming to be? I don't. If I'm going to game away from my theatre room, a laptop will suffice about 99% of the time... for me.

to give you all a bit of info........
go to www.gp2x.co.uk to see a similar devise....
now remember gizmondo is dead.....
now remember how the graphics card in the gizmondo was equal to the xbox gpu.....
see how it only costs 124.99 ($200.00 ish)
now think about the combined media functions of this and 360.......
get happy people !
