It looks like someone may have figured out what happened to a batch of those early Xbox 360s to make them lock-up and overheat. A German modder took apart two Xbox 360s and found that during assembly someone forgot to remove the protective layer of foil from the GPU heatsink’s heat transfer pad.
In other words instead of cooling, the heatsink was likely acting like a frying pan.

I wonder who the dipsh*t responsible for that one was? PAUL CERULA 03.10.2006 17:32 Very interesting, this would be pretty good news for MS. Unregistered - Rabid Cat 03.10.2006 18:22 Maybe we should stop sending jobs overseas. Someone making $15 per hr. might have caught this error, as opposed to some dolt in a sweat shop making six cents a day. Unregistered - Nitz 03.10.2006 18:24 VERY NICE FIND. It made no logical scence why some would overheat and some would not. BUT NOW, this makes it all come clear. I have a release machine, but have had NO ISSUES. I guess "Hung Chong Do Lo Weenee Pee" was feeling good that day on the assembly line. haloalldaylo 03.10.2006 18:28 If Ping Pong wasnt daydreaming about opening a martial arts school Then doing his job crap like this wouldnt happen. Unregistered - Felix 03.10.2006 18:38 Maybe his mind was off in Wonderland thinking about how he will *ROCK* when the new table tennis game comes out. This is nice to know, proves it was not the MACHINES FAULT IN DESIGN. Unregistered - malachi22 03.10.2006 18:47 "If Ping Pong wasnt daydreaming about opening a martial arts school Then doing his job crap like this wouldnt happen." That is TOO funny, thankyou for that...i needed it ROFL! Unregistered - Raven 03.10.2006 19:35 A german Xbox Manager refered to the above mentioned article on http:///www.dreisechzig.net - THE FOIL BELONGS THERE - it is part of the thermal system - so please don't take your system apart Unregistered - gfd 03.10.2006 20:20 i heard that the foil is for good things!! haloalldaylo 03.10.2006 21:20 I heard alumum can cause cancer Unregistered - TheTruth 03.10.2006 21:55 The foil is part of the termal tape. http://www.chomerics.com/products/thermflow_557_558.htm QUOTE: THERMFLOW T558 is recommended for applications where rework and ease of disassembly are important. This new material provides the high performance properties typical of free-film phase change materials with the added benefit of easy removal. T558 is the same phase material as T557 which has been coated on one side of a conformal metal foil carrier. It is easily attached onto a heat sink or heat spreader, leaving the metal foil surface exposed. This foil eliminates the need of a protective liner, which simplifies the final assembly process and minimizes shipping concerns and contamination issues. DarkLegacy 03.10.2006 22:21 Well, I really doubt that a small piece of foil like that would increase the heat conduction between the Heatsink & what it is mounted to by much. I doubt even a single degree in celsius. What that said though, that is still a pretty good screwup on there part. Alot of the overheating problems occuring are the fault of the users. As said by raytard, poor placement of the system is the leading cause of this. Leave the system in a wide open area with atleast a feet of clearence in every direction. Also a slow burn in of the system is an excellent idea. You don't want to put immediate stress on the system cus that can lead to overheating issues down the road as well. Been burning in computer CPU's & GPU's (Video Cards) for many years. It is a common thing to do to assure the best operation out of your products & a lower risk of burning out. DarkLegacy 03.10.2006 22:23 You gotta excuse some of the off topic statements in my post. It was a complete copy & paste of the same post I made on another Xbox 360 related site. I should of editted it first =) Unregistered - X2 Extreme 03.11.2006 02:07 So what is the cause for my X360 locking up with the latest update? since the update I have 3 lit lights, the xbox wont boot, the manufacture date is 24th Oct 2005, WTF is happening? I am so pi**ed off with M$. I just got back from a short trip, turned on my XB and was told to update, now its dead. This is my 3rd X360, it seems like I have had more down time with this machine than I have spent playing it, now I have to wait again and I only just got GRAW yesterday, damn am I p****d off Unregistered - X2 Extreme 03.11.2006 02:22 Thats it, I give up with M$, I have had enough of this cheep piece of junk, it seems I'm not the only person suffering with the problem I have, F***ing M$ are useless, I want my money back, I should get compensation for all the hassle I've had. The german report was correct as the newer chip designs run hotter and have necessitated newer solutions to the heat management problem including the transfer process. This is ALL chips including the newer PCs and server boards, as well as anything like XBOX360, PS3, etc. This report is so bogus it's ridiculous. Unregistered - SMARTY PANTS 03.12.2006 21:02 M$ should sue those SOB's into submission. And anyone else that is not an electronics expert that makes up BS stories. Crap like this makes me mad as hell. Add Comment |
