Speaking at the unveiling of Rare's Viva Piñata today in New York, Microsoft Game Studios' General Manager Shane Kim made some interesting comments regarding the next Halo game.
First of all it could seem like the next Halo game, or the mythical Halo 3 as Kim called it, will not be coming to Xbox 360 before the end of 2006. Since Kim named the recently announced Viva Piñata as "most important game of 2006”, it does seem like Microsoft is expecting Bungie’s next project to be ready some time in 2007. Of course this is pure speculation, but we do agree with CVG that it is highly unlikely that Microsoft would rate “Halo 3” less important than Viva Piñata. However the most interesting bit of info to come out of Shane Kim when questioned about “Halo 3” was that an announcement regarding the next Halo game was just around the corner. "We'll be talking about anything we're doing in the Halo universe - whether that's Halo 3 as I call it or anything else - at the right time. That time will be soon." And maybe even more interesting is the way he referred to the game, “anything we're doing in the Halo universe”, could this possibly mean that the next Halo will not be anything like Halo and Halo 2 at all? Could Bungie be working on some sort of squad-based shooter, or maybe an RTS game set in the Halo universe? Or could it be an RPG or even a MMO game? The only thing certain is that we will know soon enough, most likely in May when E3 kicks off. Add Comment  1 -

I've played Halo2 on xbox live to death and It's still the only game I can play a few hours a day everyday and still not get bored and theres hundreds of thousands of people like me (over the past year and a half) so hopefully they dont change the gameplay too much as bungie have a winning formula! 3 -

I do think that both halo games were great but to release another one like it would just not cut it. Before the 360 had been released i prefered playing fps on the pc due to its superior performance over the past gen consols and of course the mouse and keyboard. There is nothin more addictive than firin up some Counter Strike Source on the PC, which i hope they one day port to the 360. Anyway I am sure either way, whatever type of game the new halo will be it will be something special because if the game is ready for the launch of the ps3 it could be the weapon of mass destruction for Microsoft considering we will already have a list of great games such a oblivion, graw, gears of war etc. 6 -

"Halo 3" must be a FPS!Spunkmeyer43 03.16.2006 07:44 Now don't get me wrong i think it is a great idea to make a RPG, MMO or deviate to some other platform within the Halo brand. It makes sense for microsoft/bungie and it does for fans. The problem is, is that Halo is where it is because its a FPS that offers a rich story, brilliant gameplay and lush graphics. IF they produce a Halo game that is not in this sequence then they signing they're own death warrant... Halo fans are by there very nature quite obsessive about the game and a move like that would have them burning their controllers in the streets! People want more, i my self loved the first Halo but hated the single player on Halo 2 was a huge dissapointment, and thats what they should be concentrating on. Personally i want to see the 360 push to knew graphical hights, i want clever AI but more than anything i want the story to make up for the slop that was halo 2, i dont simply want another game based on another Halo with all the same levels and character, (oh sorry they did include a gorila), i don't want to play as an elite, i don't want a haphazard story and i don't want to clock it in 8 hours! Personally i want to see a battle on earth some form of invasion, but thats just me! A MMO is a great idea but for your own sake Bungie stick to what you know and make up for Halo 2! Unregistered - theSeus 03.16.2006 07:57 All of you have got to face the facts that Halo 2 blew huge chunks compared to Halo1. The problem with Halo 2 is that it was nubified. There was very little depth to the gameplay. I sold the game after 6 months. The Halo universe has always pushed the FPS genre on the consoles and if they simply do a repeat of the last gen with all the unsual improvements it simply won't be next gen enough for me to want to pick it up. They need to have a story line but the only way to simulate the massive large scale battles that need to take place in the final showdown of the series is to go MMO. I'm glad that most of you don't develop games because all I hear is "I want the same old thing just redone". If that is all we ever got than the industry would stagnate. Halo will be the first game that I think will really push the next gen, and that applies to all the consoles. 9 -
asdf 03.16.2006 08:13 Well he WAS, after all, speaking at the Viva Pinata unveiling, do you think he would say that another game was more important? I doubt it, even if they had a big announcement about Halo 3 coming up, they wouldn't want it to be given away, nor would they want to overshadow the game they were announcing that day. I think all we can REALLY take from this is that we'll be getting an announcement soon (and that whole "halo universe" bit is interesting...), but I'm not sure we can infer that Halo 3 won't be out until 2007. But then, maybe I'm just too optimistic. 10 -
asdf 03.16.2006 08:18 for the record, I semi-agree with #8: the only reason to buy Halo 2 was the online multiplayer. I got bored about 3 levels into the single player, but I still pull it out to play online on my 360 from time to time. I suppose another Halo FPS is coming to push the story forward and be all 360-pretty, but I'd be more interested in some other Halo-universe game 11 -

But Rare is developing it so that is a little wierd, maybe Bungie and Rare have some kind of agreement. There are layers and layers of options. As for Forerunner I have not seen the article yet so i can't comment but if Bungie let Rare make a prequel game while Bungie was working on a true Halo 3 game that would be interesting since they could launch 2 Halo games close to the PS3 launch... With maybe the Rare game being the squad or MMO based many spartans thing. Similar to KOTOR for Star Wars. I am not a Halo freak who has like a timeline and the history all in my head, I played the games and i enjoyed them. The system including custom paint and lighting was $15K. My 360 hooked to the system is beyond anything you small mind can imagine and probably could not buy. And fans are so godman gullible it is not even funny they will fall all again into the bs rumors and speculation system again...i have been reading this board for some time now and everytime there was talk about halo 3 it turned out to be a denial and official at microsoft were saying that it would not come out at the same time as PS3 and this and that....but now apprently the news of ps3's relase is official so something "official" as to come out about halo 3 relase time. I am so pissed off at game studios filling us with lies and BS ....bungie and blizzard come to mind on this topic ,they are working on stuff but they keep denying all the time on what they are working on.... WHY???? give me one godman good reason why? Epic has released info that they are working on unreal and gears of war for the longest of time and they do release info and keep us informed at least...ubisoft releases info also on upcoming games even months in advance. To me,keeping a project under wraps especially a sequel and to top that to say BS that " we ain't working on it" is like a kick in the nuts to their fans and is a total disrespect sign from the part of said company...the fans got in love with their product and make them tons of money but they still play catch and seek with fans....BS!!!!! why don't they simply announce that they are working on it...everything is going well and a released date or timeframe will come soon....that way you build even more interest and drama to the release date.... those President of those companies should have their kahunas crushed to show them how it feels to be jerked around and how it feels to be played for fools.... most companies don't do that kind of those denial tactics but for those doing them especially bungie at the moment A big kick in the butt is all they deserve... i am upset because those marketing tactics are ruining the industry...fan appreciations and fanbase...causing retailers headaches as they pass for liars when they have to say that the release day is not what was announced... all of this and more is undermining the industry and companies keep whinning that their profit is down...well is those said companies would stop lying to their custoimers than maybe people would support them more.... nuff said 81 -

Are you telling me the biggest selling point for the 360 right now is gonna be changed....why. Buyers dropping left aThe just jump to a different style. Worst Idea ever. BUT, in the future after Halo 3 they very well could create something like that and I welcome it gladly. Also the continuation of halo 4 as an FPS. The plot in any game can be continued if you do it right. Games can go past 3 sequels, or is that one game with 2 sequels. This guys a dreamer, and probably just trying to get publicity. HALO WILL LIVE ON, I doubt an enormous staff of some of the best programmers would suddenly stop the Halo franchise. Also the 2007 thing is unlikely because Christmas Halo 3 and 360 is an explosive combination. I doubt they'll skip that just for another month. Most people are holding out for Halo 3 but that's a mistake cause I don't think there will be a price drop just a game in the bundle. My greatest hope for them would be to bundle Halo 3 and a Premium by Christmas. That would ignite an incredible XBL and 360 sales. I try to steer clear of any mention to halo because there are plenty of other great aspects about the Xbox and 360. However I have to admit, Halo CE is the main reason why I bought an Xbox in the first place (that coupled with my PS2 disk read error problem) and I instantly fell in love with the Halo Franchise. Whether you like it or not, Halo got where it is today for being a GREAT game with Halo 1 and Halo 2 both receiving "game of the year" awards the same year they debut and Halo 3 is the most anticipated game of next gen and those are the facts. Do you really think Microsoft is going to let Sony and Ninty take control of the next holiday Season?
