Lucid360 04.04.2006 11:30 The reason this generation will shape the console wars FURTHER is because again we have 3 consoles. The Nintendo, Sega, Playstation of old is now Nintendo, Playstation, Microsoft of now. With a series of miscalculations Sega was taken out of the console business due to bad reception of possibly the finest 2d system (Saturn) amplified by the emergence of 3d gaming (Playstation) and the strengths of the N64 with the kid crew. It could happen this generation with consoles also. Because the market cannot hold 3 options for long.. And risks are being taken. Sony is risking alot with a 10 year projected life cycle for PS3 opposed to the normal 5 years, Revolution with its controller, XB360 is in the safest place of all the consoles, being a little conservative in the innovations it is trying to produce. Don't read that as a slam on the 360 sometimes being safe can be a gamble. SO there is ALOT at risk for Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo. Sony and Microsoft are the safest and as such have the deepest pockets due to the fact they are megacorporations with interests other than consoles. Nintendos legacy is gaming. We lost one legacy of gaming company last generation in Segas console. Sony and Microsoft definately have the most to fight over. Considered on many levels, Brand Superiority, America vs. Japan (and that is important to Japanese who show fanatic support for companies on their own country). Microsoft risked alot to run out almost a year early before PS and Nintendo. Because Sony has seen how big the online gaming thing is and are now trying to catch the wave. Nintendo is banking on a new controller to change gaming as we know it. That is why this generation of consoles is important. Does the market place want to play it safe with an established company that started the revolution (Sony), Fully want to grasp online gaming with a different company (Microsoft), Grasp new methods of gaming and ideas (Nintendo). 4 -

Even parents who buy for their children go in with a very specific "order" from the children, who have undoubtedly done their research. "But even with all its success Halo 2 sold to only about a third of the Xbox installed base. And of that third only about another third (at most) were Xbox Live subscribers. So we are still talking about a subset of a subset. When you are dealing with the type of hardware numbers Sony is looking for with the PlayStation 3, the Xbox Live subscriber base is a rounding error." And this is just dumb. Let's look at LAST generation's numbers and just copy and paste them into a prediction about THIS generation. Bright. So the original Xbox had only about 10% of its owners on Live. The 360 now has fully half of its owners subscribing to Live, and with Microsoft continuing to push Live's importance, this can only go up. I for one never had any intention of getting Live when I had the Xbox, but I was sold on its increased usefulness (more games, more people to play with) on the 360, so I got it. I have to think that other gamers are thinking the same way. "On the other hand, looking back to what Sony was talking about in 2000 it is clear that Sony has not been ignoring the online world." But did Sony actually DO anything that they said they would in 2000? Did they even try to? No, it was just more lies and hyperbole to hype up their system. Somebody in marketing may have thought it was a good idea, but the people who actually make this stuff haven't been doing a thing with it until Live scared them into it a few months ago. Finally, his discussion of the market value of these companies is just idiotic. It's not the console wars that are hurting Microsoft and Sony: Microsoft has stayed relatively stable since the tech bubble burst in 2000-2001 (after the initial point that he chooses to compare the present with), and Sony's video game division is its strongest. Sure, Nintendo has "only" lost about 10% of its value, but they are a video-games-only company, and so they're not a reasonable comparison. 5 -

Unregistered - The M.A.R.T. 04.04.2006 13:35 I almost agree with all above. @Lucid360 I don't agree with the deep pockets of Sony, they have been in deep financial problems due to disturbing cash flows, had to reorganize and fire people, but still isn't having a great financial picture overall. If we take the stock rates of the three companies, MS did the best since the year 2000 with only cuts to 50% of its value, if I'm right Sony got chopped to 33% of it's value. In the end, MS will have the longest breath. And we've seen it before: OS/pushing hardware to use Windows --> MS has domintation Browser --> Netscape was big some time, IE defeated it in no-time Messengers --> ICQ was unbeatable one time, who is not using MSN nowadays? Now that were all software products, but still if it's not with the 360, it will be with the next-next-gen ;) Consoles --> Sega/Nintendo lots of years ago, then Nintendo/Sony for some time, now it will be XBOX-MS/Sony and a little bit of Nintendo there are always some kids playing Mario and Zelda which will not die easily ;) 7 -

YEAH RIGHT SONY LIES It could only get 1 screen do 1080p and only in 4096 colours, with not to many polygones/graphics on screen, so expect Tetris in 1080p, the rest in 720p (as the 360 does) or maybe even in 480p because Sony doesn't demand 720p standaard as MS does with the 360! And the way they did it was alot safer than with a PC. There is nothing really to infect on that console... you going to infect the VDUs awww... Now they have hard drives and more PC like OS systems so it might be easier... Even thought the Dreamcast used a version of Microsofts kernal and OS in the DC it was radically different. 21 -

MS and Sony target a different demographic and that is why Nintendo is even still around after the Gamecube.. The Gamecube was big for about 2 mins. Not that it sucks ... just Nintendo has intrenchged itself as a pre teen gaming machine and they work it well. No need for them to compete for the worshipped 18-34 demographic they are locked in because every kid who is 7-8 wants a nintendo. Good safe business for them. Yes agree on the whole Microsoft is a juggernaut that is so diversified they can prectically do the XBox thing as a hobby. Sony is losing due to the immergiance of the ipod... Wheres the Sony walkmanpod? Yes when I am buying electronics SOny is a good brand but MS is going everywhere. Hell they took a loss on the WebTV thing and didnt even stop because even all the geeks who love opensource ... LINUX still has a WAYSS to go to challenge Windows. Browsers are such a niche market now and windows got beat down with their I Explorer over intergration but they are a massively amorphous company and they adapt. Omali 04.04.2006 20:21 sony fanboys STFU dont be mad because you still have no console. thats one. and is it me, or is this article at least a little biased against MS? i was really surprised at the way this guy downplayed both Xbox Live and Halo 2, which regardless of whether you think Halo 1 was better or you like killsone (haha fags), you cant deny it was a benchmark for video game history, period. Xbox Live is the most advanced online community on any gaming platform, and that DOES count for something. That example he gave with the best buy was really dumb too, because i doubt a Joe Schmoe would get the PS3 over the 360 JUST BECAUSE online is free because 1) he himself keeps downplaying the impact of online gaming on consoles in general, not only xbox, and 2) he fails to bring the price of the PS# into the picture at all. If the PS3 costs $700, what regular person would give a rat's ass about free online if the console itself would break the bank? idk if it's just me but this guy's arguments we're way too weak and really didnt show the "tons of research" they apparently did. 30 -
