TOKYO (AP) - Sony Corp. and Toshiba Corp. said Thursday they are in negotiations about how to resolve their competing next-generation optical disk formats, aiming to give consumers a unified video technology. But both sides played down a report in the business daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun Thursday that said the Japanese electronics makers were on the verge of agreeing on a compromise 'hybrid' next-generation DVD format as soon as this month.

Heh, there goes that Blu-Ray is better but HD-DVD is cheeper talk. What may occur is some type of player that plays both. So if you do get a Blu-Ray disk, its just a high storage disk instead of a totally different brand. Like Blu-Ray can be for backing up your PC files and whatnot, and HD-DVD can be for movies. Both companies will win if that's the case. It's about time though. I'm getting tired of these talkes about which is better.

Havn't some HD-DVD players been release already? This'll be a nice kick in the teeth for early adopters if it goes through.

Sounds like Blu-Ray has alot of support. So i guess all that support is magically going to bring wealth to every body and their mama.$1000,GOOD LORD" THATS ALOT OF MONEY!!!.Won't happen".Sh!t personally this is a tough battle,on one hand you got Blu-Ray", and the blu disc that can hold but loads of stuff wich is cool i guess,it will be good for just a few things (trilogies)and such? / and on the other you got HD-DVD" that has the same quality picture and is cheaper and has little support. This is how people are going to see it #1-[:Blu-Ray cool! im a (guy)i need all the best stuff]: #2-[ O! look (girl!) HD DVD is so much cheaper than B-R and it looks the same] now do the math 1+2= GEE! Blu-Ray have better get cheap quik else hollywood will scub Blu-Ray.I forgot poor people in general won't buy Blu-Ray.

I hope they have a buyback or steep discount program for these earlier adoptors.

To be honest I would really wish with all my heart that this would come true because I could buy in now instead of waiting years....2 years too long.

I mean it would loose the 360 optional drive in a different position and ps3 would already have one so It'd seem like PS3 would be better since it comes with it already. But I don't care, it'll work itself out and MS will stay very competitive with how much both a premium and "HD-Blu" drive add on would cost to stay below PS3 costs. Don't expect a price drop until PS3 shortages end, so that's like a year from now.

Buy a 360 now and don't wait for Halo 3 cause the price will be the same.

Either way fellas MS always takes care of their customers with quality american products and not cheap japanese electronics. That's actually how Japan survived after WW2 because of their dirt cheap and horrible quality toys sold in America. Not much has changed.

6 - HD DVD's DEATH
Unregistered - pRo loGic II 04.27.2006 17:06
Is it going to still cost an arm and a leg for a duel format player?.And after Blu-Ray uses HD-DVD to get on their feet wiil HD-DVD be fuced?.With HD-DVD" having no support from Hollywood, and Blu-Ray not having any support from the costomers the merge seems like a good idea, for now!.THE HD-Blu ,will it cost $1300.00?

They both use very similar technologies. Its very feasible. I blame it on Sony for even TRYING to bring another proprietary media format to the market. This could've all been avoided. My 2 cents.

Cheers.

Bad idea! the fear of death in both parties brought them to the table on this.Toshiba should keep to their own game plan the HD is more affordable.blu-ray is going to handi-cap their sales.

Sony sees whats coming to them and now they want to make a deal huh i say no way let the poor suckers who want Blu-Fay pay for it cause stupidity runs deep if you are really ganna spend hundreds more on something that has the same quality as somthing (HD-DVD) that costs hundreds less.

Seriously get a grip people i once too was a sony fool but not any more take alook at whats true.

N64 controller ports 4, GC ports 4, DC ports 4, xbox ports 4, sony 2
N64 MemCard Slots 2 per control, DC 2per Con, xbox 2 per Con, sony 2 on system
Oh and for the SFboys name me 5games (not sports) that uses the multiTap
that stupid stand for the ps2 why isnt that free with the system?
no other system has so many addons as the ps2 when they could have been standard i truely hope the sony consumers are ready to pay the price for their beloved ps3

HD-DVD is where my money will BE

Unregistered - XBOX360 04.27.2006 18:54
COME ON TOSHIBA!I would not trust SONY at all.SONY just trying to get a mass market with blu-ray.hd-dvd is the best choice but if the two giants make a unified format it will be best to wait for Fujifilm to come out with HVD PLAYERS HOLOGRAPHIC VERSATILE DISC.IM a say it again come on TOSHIBA!!!! HD-DVD is the best choice period due to price. New disc players is always nice though.

THE HIVE TYRANT 04.28.2006 06:30
to me this sounds sony pussafied nah mean
check it
sony and toshiba have teamed up
basically wussing out of this war
by making a compatable reader of hd vs blu
meaning
that they no we ordinary peeps cant afford there homosexual ray players
where as we could afford the hd dvd player that micro has introduced
so
they mix there machines
which in tern is going to delay the ps3 even more
which i dont care cause its hella fagoty it wont let me say the real word
but
i just think theve kinda cheated out of the dvd war thats been raged

theve managed to get blu ray to like 55 gbs
and hd 50 gbs
big deal
its retarted im perfecatly satsified wit the dvd im using now
besides no game at this moment has topped 5 gbs
in usage
so this leap is just mindboggaling
its dumb
a waist of money if u ask me
if i was going to go for a hd dvd or blu ray
i would spring for microsofts hd periferial
its going to be cheap
and easy
so fuk blu ray
