At last nights Sony conference/presentation, Sony laid out the dual sku pricing for the new PS3. $499 for a 20GB HDD version, and $599 for a 60GB HDD. Well... being the cheap bastards that we are at 360-Deals, we thought we'd throw our our opinion on the PS3 launch price proposed.
Read More Add Comment Islandkiwi 05.09.2006 08:13 (I originally posted this over at ps3today, but relevant here as well) This was cheaper than I expected, I imagined it was start off at 599. But I feel sorry for the Europeans, who always seem to get the pointy end of the value stick. Is it worth the price? In my opinion, probably not. I could get a 360 and a Wii for the price of the lower end Ps3 (allegedly, Wii has not shown pricing yet). I buy consoles to play games. So personally, I'd rather have two consoles than one console. The controller is another issue. No vibration anymore. They say it has to do with the motion sensing, I imagine it has a lot more to do with the patent infringement lawsuit. But we've had game vibration forever; believe me, you'll miss it. Think of driving games, it was a very effective way of alerting you to the fact you were taking turns too fast. But almost as importantly this affects the backwards compatibility of all ps/ps2 games. I say almost because, as a 360 owner, I don't go back to the older library all that much. Sony's online for free thing doesn't sound any different than Xbox Live, either. I did not hear them say you could play games for free online. I also did not hear that Sony required all games to be hi-def, or that they were required to be online enabled. The only requirement I've heard is that they be on Blu-Ray. Finally, the two hard drive system. The $499 PS3 told me something, it was that MS may very well drop the price of their premium system. Even if only by 50 dollars, it would certainly sting. But if Sony is willing to sell at $499, then the 20 gig hard drive isn't adding that much to the cost of the console. Unregistered - Jeremy 05.09.2006 08:21 Very well said Islandkiwi. The only real difference between the 360 and PS3 is the bigger hard drive. Yes there are some other differences but they are not that big for the price difference. Will the PS3 sell.....of course it will but MS just made a huge jump between the sales gap. I personally "WAS" going to buy a PS3 but not for that much. Money better spent on games for the 360. Unregistered - polpot 05.09.2006 08:22 whats the point in the core version if you cant play BLU-RAY. Downgrade Station 3 Unregistered - New X-Bug 05.09.2006 08:27 I agree, and you are FORCED to buy the more expensive PS3 or you loose half of the features they are bragging about so much. I was waiting, but no more .. 360 here I come. I could not wait till this evening to watch the MS conference and then come here and laugh at the X-Bugs, but now I will watch and enjoy what I have to look forward to now that I will BECOME an X-BUG myself. But maybe I will not watch it, becuase right after work I will be buying my 360 and will want to play (something I have been waiting to do for FAR TO LONG) Do you guys think I should buy a LIVE membership or not ??? I hear rumour that MS may announce that LIVE will now be Free for online play. Unregistered - Me 05.09.2006 09:08 If you want to wait until friday or next monday to see if it is going to be free fine, but whatever happens get a gold subscription, the excellent games on the 360 will be have added value to them when you play online, I am sure you will enjoy every minute. Unregistered - dlow 05.09.2006 09:11 This is to much . and if you watch it you saw that all the games look exatly like 360 you can see that in nba live love the same as the 360 version Unregistered - A gamer 05.09.2006 09:18 Since buying a PSP and selling it on ebay a week later, I told myself, no more Sony products, at any price. Also, as with the PSP in the past they will initially launch 3 million consoles, 50% to Japan, 49.9% to our American friends and 0.01% to us Europeans, Sony Europe sucks. And then Sony will say that there are millions of Grillstations 3 stuck in ships somewhere. Long live the XBox 360... Unregistered - shotty 05.09.2006 10:17 People trust me there is no xbox 360 price drop. Maybe in november or december but not anytime sooner. I guess people are know starting to realize why microsoft choose not to included HD-DVD. First the system will be atleast $100 dollars more, would have got delayed till spring and will have forced people to adopt a new format. Its all about options and since microsoft isn't the one creating the new format it makes no sence to force it's customers to adopt it. As MS said it's all about options. Its ridiculous that sony took off hdmi off the core model then how do you get to the 1080p resolution and more important what about the downcoverted movies. MS can stick with the pricing it has now and till be successful but to them it's about overkill so expect a 50 buck pricew drop this christmas. I heard MS is pumping out 400 000 xbox 360's a week. THats amazing!! Unregistered - Ric Hard 05.09.2006 10:33 If all this happens, the 360 will probably be top dog in Japan and be the only Non Japanese console to do it. Even Japan has to see this is to high of a price. About time you get done with extras, like a controller, maybe a few games (if they even have that many at launch) and some other peripherals you probably be paying anywhere near $800 to a $1000. Now Imagine what you would pay if you had to buy it from Ebay. It's crazy to even think that. I think a wii is sounding pretty good right now. Most likely that would cost about $199 and think of all the stuff you could buy for the Wii with the money you save from the PS3. You will look like the man on the block or even all the 360 games thats coming out around that time. Gears of War, Too Human. Maybe even a suprise and get Halo 3 And so on. So good job Sony for being a FVCK UP. Unregistered - PMX360 05.09.2006 11:14 We have to learn from the 360 launch, some guys paid thousands of dollars in ebay to get it in november, so the PS3 it's going to be the same, a lot of people complaining about the price and then in the launch week or month they get crazy and pay whatever. Well it happend with the 360 may be because everybody was so curious about HD gaming, ahhhhhh i dont know.. I just know that this time i wont pay more than us$600.00, sorry ebayers , NOT THIS TIME!! Unregistered - xbox 360 05.09.2006 11:15 I love my xbox 360 f#ck ps3 and i am really lookin forward to the wii and its low price...... Unregistered - dood 05.09.2006 11:31 Sony just killed themselves.. Just remember that the price differences between the two systems are not just HD space. http://blog.wired.com/games/index.blog?entry_id=1476047 The 'crippled' package, as so many likes to put it, has the following things missing from it: No Memory Stick/SD Card/CompactFlash inputs. No IEEE 802.11 Wireless No HDMI ( As the article I pointed out above states, you can't watch Blu-Ray movies in HiDef ) With these components missing, there is no way you can upgrade this machine to the better version. You'd have to buy the whole system all over again if you wanted the advanced features. I'll end up owning all the consoles anyways, but i'm sure Sony F'd up here by flaunting XBox Live and Wii Remote functionalities that they "Innovatively" added *cough* STOLE *cough* to their new console. Pffft. Good Game Sony! (^)(>.<)(^) Unregistered - Ender 05.09.2006 11:42 I think that we will see more people chosing the 360 over the ps3 come this holiday season, right now you have all these people that a super excited to get ahold of a ps3 but the scenerio will be the same come this holiday season everyone will be looking but there will be no ps3's to be found, but oh wait whats this, a console that does almost everything the ps3 does and what! its cheaper and oh my GOD its actually in stock... you can see this playing out over and over again Unregistered - XBOX 360 05.09.2006 12:08 OOOOh my gooooosh, the ps3 fans tallllllked soooo omuch sh!t. Sayin we'll have blu g@y and blu toothless lol but yeah where's your rumble lol. Ken Kut f*ck said cofidently we dont see a reason to have two systems it only confuses the consumers....tsk tsk tsk what a pitty they copied us and totally sold out the ps3 fan base. I would never pay that much for a gaming console. I paid 399.99 for the xbox 360 premium package but look what you get i mean its over a hundred dollars worth of stuff with it plus its just a better system. The 360 controllers are wonderful, lol copying the wii was crazy but the price point is suicide.....its all a joke MS is was and always be the better choice....talk sh!t now sony fan twerps......lol I see even they are pissed off they waited all this time and hung to sonys everyword like fools. We had our 360's since last november and been enjoyin them when all they had we trumped up movies. and on top of that when their mommies and daddies go to the store for the ps3 they gonna see 499 and 599 and be like what the hell then the clerk is goin to explain and then offer them an instock 360 for cheaper even if they go with the 299 core package no harddrive and wired controller...its still cheaper and upgradabe lol sony suuuuuuckss. lol lol lol lol lol lol lol lol Unregistered - Matthew Cranney 05.09.2006 12:09 Microsoft did the next big thing this month! You can download awesome E3 Stuff off of the XBOX Live Marketplace.. unless if you don't have a 360! Unregistered - XBOX360 05.09.2006 13:49 #11 I AGREE!XBOX360 ALL THE WAY FU#$ SONY!SONY IS A COPYCAT BRAND Unregistered - blaze33 05.09.2006 16:05 i dont think ps3 need 60GB ...20GB is fine for me..im not gonna download HD videos in my ps3...why do i do that when i have already 100GB PC....and even if im gonna download HD videos....its like 200MB the maximum for an HD video(unless it was a HD movie)...and i heard the 499$ unit doesnt have WI-FI....who cares!!! ,im gonna connect my ps3 via ethernet cable just like my old good ps2... and lets not forget that there is still USB ports..and there a lot of stuff you can do with these ports... now..can someone tell any other problems ps3 have with the 499$ unit? i dont think there is any problems....therefore ps3 is still in the next-gen war...now it all depends on the games...if ps3 games are better..than ps3 wins...but if xbox360 are better..than xbox360 wins..so far xbox360 has more libary of games...but ps3 have better quality games(FF13,DMC4,GT5,MGS4...and many more)....but i heard many great xbox360 games are gonna be reveald in E3...i guess we just have to wait... Unregistered - GEV1L 05.09.2006 16:43 Out of all the games you just mentioned, only mgs4 sounds really any good. I've never liked the devil may cry series, gt5 could be good but not too into racing, and FF; Well lets just say that Square-enix is kind of like Rare in the way that everyone stilll gives them props even though their games are nbot up to par with what they have released in the past. And I also seriously doubt that FF13 will be better tha olbivion. Sorry but actually paying an amazing game if far superior to watching an extremely nice cut-scene, than play for five mintues than watching another 20 minute cut-scene. However that assasins game by ubisoft looks really sweet. Unregistered - DEIx15x8 05.09.2006 16:44 How do they expect parents to spend 500-600 on a game system. I had a hard enough time convincing mine that $300 wasn't allot for the Xbox and then convincing them that the $400 for the 360 wasn't allot was evan harder but made slightly easier by the amount of extras you get over the core, something evan they could see the value in. But $500-600 isn't evan in my budget anymore and would never be possible to convince them to buy. Unregistered - xbox 360 05.09.2006 16:52 19... can you imagin parents buying a game machine, for 600bucks plus tax...multiple kids so you need multiple controllers, then multiple games, then accessories all in one purchase, just not cool at all. I wouldnt do it. But atleast with the 360 you can get the core package, with a wireless controller, and a memory card and a used games for starters and upgrade as you go at your own pace....sony sucks Add Comment |
