Only seconds after Sony’s E3 2006 Press Briefing ended and many gamers had made their annual “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” conclusions. Now whether Sony’s E3 kickoff was a success or a failure will be contemplated from now until the release of the PlayStation 3 – which is November 17th in North America. But what is Sony’s chief competitor thinking at this point? TeamXbox were lucky enough to stir up a quick chat with the head of Microsoft Game Studios, Shane Kim, and GM of the Game Developer Group at Microsoft, Chris Satchell.

For a system that seems to be comparable to the 360 (other than the hard drive) This price seems very steep. Just another example of Microsoft taking over Sony as the number one gaming console. Unregistered - Rudy 05.09.2006 08:22 I agree, and you are FORCED to buy the more expensive PS3 or you loose half of the features they are bragging about so much. I was waiting, but no more .. 360 here I come. Unregistered - Yay 05.09.2006 08:29 RRRRRRRRrrrrrrrrrrrr I hate to computers at work. THey block everything. I will I could read this article. Unregistered - p h fat 05.09.2006 08:34 and what happened to killzone and motorstorm....? what happened to duel screens of 1 ps3....? um does that mean sony lied to us.....? i dont like being lied to....! Unregistered - rich 05.09.2006 09:11 i think we shud go 2 sum sony forums and kick sum ass. Unregistered - Dark 05.09.2006 09:50 I saw some mad sony fagboys on their forums geting all pissed about the PS3 price I bet some even converted to 360. Microsoft Knows what its doing. Unregistered - s 05.09.2006 10:11 Because H3 is about to do you ANAL! Unregistered - Ric Hard 05.09.2006 10:17 I wonder how Japan feels about this. In the next few weeks we will know if Sony's going to win this war by seeing how many 360 sells in Japan. If the 360 starts to sell Sony should trash this project all together and stick to tv's. Unregistered - Nodoze 05.09.2006 11:27 MS is about to pwn Sony!! The press conference last night was laughably bad! Too much information about old news! UMD is a resounding failure, with most studios ceasing production for movies as they are not even breaking even. PS2 = OLD NEWS, and is proof that Sony is living in the past (PS2 sales figures = who cares). The crowd was gathered to see if Sony would put up or shut up....and they did NOT clearly demonstrate superiority over the 360. The only thing I gathered from that conference is that the games are comparable, that Sony copied live, that Sony copied Nintendo with the 6 points of control and handheld connectivity etc etc. There was NO confirmation that the Sony service included online gameplay!! The only confirmation that was provided is that Sony is interested in nickel and dime 'micro-transactions' for their music catalog ala iTunes! For a company that touts that it is all about the games....I have to ask where WERE the games?? All I saw was some driving demos, and a historical Japanese game that has you killing giant spiders!??! Amateur hour!! Unregistered - Halo3Sniper01 05.09.2006 11:46 guess we will have to wait until TGS 2006 to find out more Unregistered - Rational Observer 05.09.2006 11:51 Wow! $600 for a video game system. I'd thought I'd seen it all. But, it is a little easier pill to swallow when you see what you get: a HD player (which the 360 and Wii don't have), HD games (which the 360 and Wii don't have), motion sensing controller (which the 360 doesn't have), Bluetooth technology (up to 7 controllers), free online gaming service (~$50/ year for the 360), and prolly some other bells and whistles that Sony hasn't released yet. So let's crunch some numbers: $600 for a PS3 $400 for a 360 + $200 for Online Service ($50 a year for 4 years [4 years being the minimum life of this console generation]) So, after calming down from the sticker shock and crunching the numbers, I feel a bit better about putting up a small fortune (esp. for a college student) for the PS3. Each system will have it's perks. With the 360 coming out first (which hurt and helped for various reasons), Sony had time to see what worked/ didn't work and hopefully create a better system. I hope both will do well, cuz I want to see great games utilizing great technology. I fear that MS has invested in the current technology, hence non HD-DVD based games and a lower sticker price, and Sony has invested in the future, hence the HD player/ HD games and higher sticker price. I wonder if the 360 will be an outdated product in comparision to the PS3 come 2008, or earlier. People will rationalize spending the money on the PS3 as well as spending less to get the 360 and think they're getting a better deal. Maybe they will be and maybe not. Time will tell... [FYI: I do own a PS2 and an XBOX. I didn't really discuss the Wii cuz I'm not putting much stock into a system that's only a little more powerful than the original XBOX. I do not own a 360 yet because I wanted to see what Sony put on the table. I do plan to get a PS3 when it launches and prolly a 360 when the price drops and/ or they add a HD player version. I think both systems will do well and I don't want to equate the 360 to the Dreamcast (even though I hear the PS3 is as much a step up from the 360 as the 360 was from the original XBOX... but that's just what I heard). There is enough fan base for both systems in the US and both companies are well established, so neither will tank. The real question is the international market. The 360 failed in Japan, which will definitely not be the case for the PS3. I'll stop there cuz I'm tired of typing!] Unregistered - famo 05.09.2006 12:14 I think its funny your justifying the price of the ps3 comparing it to 4-5 years of XBL..Thats sad. MS will probably be announceing free online anyway!! How are you going to justify it then? lol.. Buy the POS it sad it has really no better option even though its coming out a year later. Blu Ray will fail and when that happens you will of wished you bought the 360!! Fact: HD DVD players have sold out in japan in the matter of days... Wow sold out in Sony's market? Thats funny huh!! #12 Just watch more of E3 and you will see MS OWNING SONY. MS will own the show and the console war. Guaranteed Unregistered - sh!t on you 05.09.2006 12:18 MS has the hd dvd add on!! "OUTDATED" YOU SAID? Actually no MS is actually ahead of its time. PS3 is nothing better!! What a blu ray drive and may I remind you the cheapest 1!!! Graphics will be the same (as stated by many developers) XBL will be way better.. Sony has no rumble in the controllers..Sony is a big let down. #12 I would do more research b/c like #13 said you are trying to convince your self of buying the ps3 when the 360 is clearly the better deal!! Unregistered - Evil 05.09.2006 12:18 You forgot to add hd tv that can display 1080P to the ps3. PAUL CERULA 05.09.2006 12:35 This article fortells what quality to expect from MS at E3. I love this guy, he says that he's not impressed at all and that means that xbox 360 stuff is going to blow people's minds. And destroy sony's image. All I want is the 360 to be given fair and balanced fan base so the market can be split. Therefore it'll be cheaper and better games. PAUL CERULA 05.09.2006 12:43 http://www.gamespot.com/e3/e3story.html?sid=6149641 Primal Rex 05.09.2006 13:50 So sony have finally reveled there price plan at long last and guest what its abount what we all thought it was going to be $499 about £350-£450 uk for the basic system and boy what a basic system it is no wi-fi no memory card reader no hdmi output i mean whats the point it looks like you carnt up grade either. you what to go online but your internet connection downstars but your systems up stairs you think to your self wi-fi the answer but no(thats the xbox 360 wi-fi adapter your thinking of)and what i think is the wost of all is no hdmi output so you carnt watch movies in HD carnt play games in HD whats the point in the blue ray disc drive. They seem to have made cut backs as well 6 usb ports now down to 4. 3 ether net ports down to 1.The 2 hdmi ports on premiem system now down to 1. Maybe sony should have released the system specs when they where finalized I think sony will go away this year at e3 knows as copycats (tilt sensor pad = Wii controller ps3 online system = xboxlive to name a few) and coplet lie bags thank you and good night. Unregistered - Rational Observer 05.09.2006 21:36 #14 MS might have the add on, but what will it cost? Plus, that's only for watching movies, not for games. Yes, there is no rumble in the controllers because it would mess with the motion sensors. The 360 is cheaper yes, but I will enjoy my true HD games on a 1080p TV (which should look better than the 1080i [which is more like 540p] or 720p that the 360 can do). #18 It is intuitive to only have one HDMI port because virtually noone has 2 HD TV's in their house (or in 1 room for that matter), nor will they for a few years. Yes, it is easy to say that Sony is being a copycat and maybe it's true. But unless you work for Sony, you don't know what they have done with their R&D dept. for the past few years. Just cuz one company came out with it first, doesn't mean they invented it or had this great epiphany. To keep things even you can easily call the original XBOX controller a copycat of the PS2 controller: dual analog sticks, rumble feature, the 4 button configuration, the shoulder buttons, etc. But the XBOX fanboys would prolly deny it, saying those are basic features or are commonplace, or something else. Well, Sony had it first, does that mean MS copied them... MS chose to get a system out sooner than the other 2 so they face being "copied" on certain things. SO WHAT! If it works and makes gameplay better: COOL! Motion sensors have the possibility to revolutionize gaming. Hard to say right now, but at least Sony has the capabilities to use it...
