Earlier today on the official Xbox site, a news article was put up pertaining to the price of the Xbox 360's HD-DVD add-on drive and mysteriously taken down within seconds. People who were surfing the site while the article was up quickly spread the news; Microsoft has yet to publicly announced the price in an official release.
Read More Add Comment Unregistered - Ric Hard 05.10.2006 20:19 If the price turns out to be that high well than its not good for MS. Think about it if you didn't own a 360 and you was waiting to see if you want a 360 or a PS3 which one you'll buy. Well if the price of the HD DVD was $200 plus a 360 system with a 20gb HDD is $399= $599. You already paying the price it would cost for a PS3 with a 60GB HDD and Blu Ray built in. Then I will go for the PS3 instead of the 360 because of the 40GB more I get with that system. MS may be their worst enemy if that happens. Don't get me wrong I have a 360 plus with all the fantastic games like. Too Human, Gears Of War, Enchanted Arms, Saint's Row and so on. I know that the future looks good for MS. But it all starts with the system and many people would rather pay that much money for a new system than one that been out for a year and you have to add on the HD-DVD. But hopefully I'm wrong. FreeMonk 05.10.2006 20:24 Well, I'm sure by the time MS release the HD-DVD drive, the price of the X360 will of dropped as well. Also, by that time, they might start selling X360's with the HD-DVD already built in. With a cheaper chip production now, they can afford do drop the console, just before the PS3 arrives on the shelves! Unregistered - ugg 05.10.2006 20:31 i dont think very many people are gona buy a 360 just for the HD DVD since a normal one is $500 so comparing it to a ps3 is kinda pointless, plus blu ray isnt supported by every studio and yes i know hd dvd isnt either but o well Unregistered - Ric Hard 05.10.2006 20:40 I understand what your saying and like I said I'm a proud owner of a 360. I waited outside on release date in the rain here in NYC at Gamestop With the number 1 on my box. But I'm speaking of the people who do care for the HD-DVD. I was just trying to point out if people had the choice of buying a 360 and the add on or just go and buy the PS3. I hope I didn't offend anybody on this site. Unregistered - shotty 05.10.2006 20:43 Xbox 360 is made for multimedia and HD gaming. Movies is secondary. If you can afford an HDTV, full surround sound and pay for HD-DVD movies then you can fork over 200 bucks for a next genereation movie device. Come on a standalone player is 500 buck this is 300 bucks less. I knew from the beggining this was the price for the device. The technology is bleeding edge and a PC equilvalent of this is going to be $300 or more. Plus this is nicely wraped in xbox 360 facia and comes with a special universal remote. Its a great deal compared to the 20Gb harddrive that's $100 and the universal remote that is like $30 bucks. Unregistered - Dante 05.10.2006 20:49 How interesting is that box 360 doesn't come with the hd player and it costs $199 now to me that sounds like a $500 package to me so who is getting ripped of now aye! Unregistered - The Man 05.10.2006 20:59 Microsoft should integrate the hd-dvd drive in the platinum system of the 360 and a 100GB HD. The core system should include a 20GB HD and standard DVD drive. Same price structure $299 $399 that would be huge. Unregistered - The Man 05.10.2006 21:04 The add on hd-dvd drive should cost no more than $99. I would not pay a dollar more. Unregistered - 360 05.10.2006 21:05 if its not out of the box on day one then, what's the purpose? They should have just kept the 360 like it was with no hd dvd playback period. Now they are really starting to look foolish. Unregistered - Master X 24 05.10.2006 21:08 WHY do u compare it to the ps3 come on the HD DVD is a ADD ON if u dont want it dont buy it ok Unregistered - Ric Hard 05.10.2006 21:09 You're exactly right it makes people mad. But it adds fuel to the fire if the HD-dvd cost $199. Unregistered - pRo loGic 05.10.2006 21:15 both add ons will cost both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray if it comes out remember that the format is not the reason you should buy a game console it's a duel player for old and new dvds Unregistered - Ric Hard 05.10.2006 21:16 It's what people do. Compare systems. We been doing this ever since the NES and the GEN. Both the PS3 and the 360 are at war for our money and people have the right to figure which one will be better for their Buck. Unregistered - pRo loGic II 05.10.2006 21:31 In the end it's only about the hard drive and the choice, they both cost the same Sony has a bigger HD and 360 a number of other things that Sony does not, plus you don't know why it cost 200 bucks Unregistered - DontHate 05.10.2006 21:35 You guys are silly its a scam that some people put to gether just to make MS look stupid and please Remember MS is NOT like Sony they don't lie, cheat, beat, and steal from their fans so i think a few people got together and said hey lets try to take some heat off of sony and make MS look bad so of course they came up with that bogus story, why didn't these so call people copy and paste the page so we all could see hummm Poor Little Sony Tricks are for your fans PS Now watch some fool go and PhotoShop a webpage up and post it tis tis tis Unregistered - pRo loGic II 05.10.2006 21:39 In the end it's only about the hard drive and the choice, they both cost the same Sony has a bigger HD and 360 a number of other things that Sony does not, plus you don't know why it cost 200 bucks. And when a bigger hard drive comes out Xbox fans will be paying a little more (2 hun or so)but thats ok cuz you don't haft to.When mommy goes xmas shopping she will still bargon shop , and guess what!, MS still made the smarter move. Unregistered - Graf Ulrich 88 - Gamertag 05.10.2006 22:07 Ladies and Gentlemen, Did you see read the full report. It said Microsoft yanked the info within seconds. That tells me that the $199.99 is not definite. Plus Microsoft knows that it would be a win-win situation if they take a initial financial loss and release for $99.99 or $149.99. If they drop the price of the Core System ($249.99) and the Premium System ($349.99) and drop the 20Gig HD too say $69.99 that would be excellent marketing. Sony would have to really justify to gamers why they should pay $250 more for their stripped down PS3 (Sony won't be including all the bells and whistles of the Premium PS3)compared to the Xbox 360 Core System and $250 more for their Premium PS3 compared to the Xbox 360 Premium addition. Peter Moore, Steve Balmer, J. Alard, Shane Kim, and Bill Gates wil not allow Sony to have any chance in this new console war. Being part of the video game industry I can tell you that they will not give Sony chance to take over the top spot in this console war. Sony doesn't have the financial resources to compete with Microsoft. Their PSP is selling poorly, UMD format is beginning to suffer from support (Movies Studios plus general public), and their throwing all their financial resources into two unproven as of yet pony's (Blu-Ray and PS3). PS3 will sell well, but I don't think Mom's and Dad's our going to shell out $250 more for a PS3 for little "Johnny and Susie." Last I checked Mom's and Dad's (myself included) are concerned about filling up our gas tanks, paying our mortgages (and other bills), and putting away money for little "Johnny and Susie" to go to college someday. PS3 is not the greatest thing since slice bread, and it isn't worth me taking the bus to work so my kids can have their $499.99 or $599.99 PS3. Anyone wish to argue that parents should shell out that kind of money for a video game console? If you support paying that much for a "Video Game Machine/Toy" then either you our rich and can afford it or your single with no family responsabilities, or you live with your parents for the last 40 years. Sincerely a parent and smart consumer, Graf Ulrich 88 Unregistered - famo 05.10.2006 22:26 I'll wait until the price is announced by MS. I don't think it will cost 200$. You figure 200$ IS A GOOD DEAL FOR A HD DVD drive anyway but I see what everyone else is saying if you add the 400$+200$ its the same price as PS3, But on the other hand atleast you have a choice. I know most on this site would want one right now but most of the public consumers don't know and care too much for hd dvd right now. I know the next gen console is a media hub but if you ask me most buy a console to play games. Anyway let's wait to see what MS has to say before jumping overboard. Just adding my opinion peace. Unregistered - Strategy 05.10.2006 22:46 I agree with post #7 First off MS needs to kill the core system. Selling a box with a HD, and without was a mistake from the beginning as it does not build consistency from a development standpoint. I am sure if the check the data that accessory sell through rate was probably boosted by core + HD purchases. Make the current premium the new core system. 20gb hard drive, wireless controller, live silver. Make a premium edition, which is a 100gb HD version (no HD-DVD), include live gold. Make a Platinum limited edition (IN BLACK), with a 100Gb hard drive, HD-DVD built in, a remote and live platinum. I for one WOULD spring for a special edition 360 with HD-DVD built in, ESPECIALLY if it were offered in black!! One only needs to look to history to see that an add on drive accessory for a console is a LOSS proposition. Peter Moore should know this best of all.....he worked for SEGA!! FreeMonk 05.10.2006 22:58 I think #17 hit it right on the head! A lot of parents have a hard time feeding and dressing there kids, as well as holding down a mortgage and travel expensive. Why would a parent pay $500-$600 (£340-£450) on a console when they can get the same thing, with a majority of the same third party titles on a console that is nearly $150-£200 cheaper!?? You also have to remember that, as with every console, you won't be getting a game for your PS3. You will be paying $500-$600 for a console and then around $60-$70 for a game if your lucky (did anyone notice that Sony didn't mention the cost of the games?), and then an extra pad for the other kid in the family. So for a basic package PS3, with 1 game and 1 extra controller so little Johny can play will set you back around $620. A lot of cash of a normal average working family. I personally think that Sony should of done it the other way and offered a PS3 console with and without a HD Drive, because that is clearly what is racking up the price. Unfortunatly, one of Sonys main reason for the PS3 is to sell Blu-Ray. Even so, the PS3 looks like a nice console, except a little pricey, even though I though it would be more expensive. It will be for the hardcore gamers and richer families at launch, then once the price drops, average joe families will probably purchase. That's if they haven't got a X360 yet, which could easily happen, especially if MS decide to drop the price before the PS3 launch. Unregistered - shotty 05.10.2006 23:24 The ps3 needs a harddrive to operate. the 2x bluray drive is too slow to stream data about a ~60 percent of the xbox 360. The harddrive is required to heavily cache the data. Sony has to have the harddrive there. Why are people complaining about the price of the HD-DVD drive. Don't buy it then if its too expensive. But compared to a $500 standalone drive this is a bargain. You have to know that HD-DVD just came out so obviously there is huge start-up costs. But it's a greate price for something so bleeding edge, plus HD movies is premium so if you can affored the fancy tv and audio set-up then $200 is nothing for the quality HD-DVD puts out Unregistered - Optimusv2 05.10.2006 23:44 This price really isn't that big a deal to be honest. People that just want to get their hands onto a xbox360 can get one without paying the added cost for a hd-dvd drive to be built in. People that want the hd-dvd drive now have the option of buying it for MUCH cheaper than you can buy a standalone player. Whereas people who want a ps3 are flat out stuck with paying the extra price there is no way they can get a cheaper ps3 without paying the cost for that blu ray drive. Unregistered - pRo loGic 05.11.2006 00:08 #21 #22 bulls-eye! my co-worker wants a 360 now after E3 and she does'nt want the HD at all she's not into online gaming, now just think of the million or so people just like her. Anyway i glad this sh!t is over i got in big trouble again!,dammm look out!!!! FreeMonk 05.11.2006 00:19 That's the good thing about MS. A lot of people still haven't got a HD Television, especially in the UK anyway, so a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray drive is a waste to them. MS has given everyone a choice. Sony hasn't! DOLBY DI GA TAL pf 05.11.2006 02:19 This is'nt a big deal to me it saves me $300 whats the big deal????? Unregistered - nn 05.11.2006 03:00 so your paying the exact same price 200 +400 =600 and it still cant be used for bigger games like sonys can 40 gig extra Unregistered - mike111 05.11.2006 03:51 whoever wrote this article is in a mental institution! XBOX 360 GAMES DO NOT SUPPORT HD-DVD ADD ON, IT IS ONLY FOR MOVIES, MICROSOFT HAVE ALWAYS SAID THIS... Unregistered - 05.11.2006 11:12 #1.... You're forgetting about the USB HDDability the 360 has. I don't know if the PS3 will also have the ability, but an extra 40 GB of onboard HDD is no value to me at all. The XBox 360 will stream media from the PC, where you might have 100000000s of GBs. It's easy to do. If you don't have a PC, then connect a HDD to the 360 externally and you have an instant upgrade. With those features, the only extra benefit or use you get from the internal HDD that you don't from streaming or external hookup is savegames. And come on!! 20 GB for savegames is plenty. So, I could give a hoot that the PS3 has a 60GB drive. HD-DVD seems to be cheaper if you look at the rumored retail prices of the movies. Plus, by the time the PS3 comes out, the 360 will already have 100+ games out. That's what killed the XBox when trying to beat out the PS2. The PS2 had a major headstart with their library. deepio 05.11.2006 12:28 At least there's the option to add it on whenever you want. Its gonna take a while before HD-DVDs are readily available for all films and at a reasonable price anyway (same goes for blu-ray). Plus if you were given a similar add-on option out of the box for the PS3 duducting $200 off the price, that price would look pretty sugar coated now wouldn't it. Unregistered - Wes 05.11.2006 12:38 The HD-dvd drive is only for movies, and microsoft are releasing it to allow people to have the option of playin high definition movies. Just remember that if blu-ray doesnt get off the ground, ps3 owners wont be able to watch hd films (i dont think anyway, lol). if blu-ray does become the hd movie base, then MS will be able to release a blu-ray drive in the future anyway! And its all very well saying to build in hd-dvd into the console, but thatd b more expensive, and the loyal people who'd already bought their 360 would be sunk! Unregistered - Ken 05.11.2006 13:34 I would not say that this is true....this site is based on articles on other website's and RUMORS....this is a rumor at most....Lets wait to see what MS is going to say...I personally don't believe that MS will price that high....they will be willing to take a hit being that they want to crush the blu-ray crap...
