Blu-ray is doomed. I came to this conclusion shortly after reading John Dvorak's thoughtful dissection of the HD DVD versus Blu-ray imbroglio. It was right on the money in all ways but one: Dvorak didn't anoint a winner; he thinks it'll take a couple of years to shake out. I think he's wrong.

Look who cares if the PS3 is $600 people are still going to buy it and it will go down in price eventually and for the record it's worth every penny it's a lot more bang for your buck than the xbox 360; and if the xbox was a grand i reckon yous idiots would go out and buy it and there would be noo mention of the price attoll on your site. Plus people waiste 2 grand on powerfull pc's that are graphically less or the same so u tell me who is going to get riped of not me i also get a blu ray player so all in all it's a super deal!

6 - #5 you are right.
Unregistered - The man 05.14.2006 13:06
I am a Xbox fan but I can see a deal when it goes by my face. The PS3 is a better deal from a bang from your Buck perspective. People tend not to buy external add on's to consoles. Remember the external harddrive for the original ps2, it did not sell well so Sony made the slim ps2 that will not support a hardrive. Sony is giving you the Blueray for $100.00. That is a good deal.

7 - What Happened to HDCP????
Xtrm L1481L1TY 05.14.2006 13:06
This makes no sense! Blu-Ray is supposed to support HDCP (High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection) and the only way to activate HDCP is through a HDMI connection. Now take the core PS3, it has a Blu-Ray player built in, however it will NOT support HDMI connections (which means no HDCP support and no true 1080p for that matter). Did I miss something here or is this why Sony is struggling with the launch date? This can probably be explained better here:

The reason DVD is not quickly going to be run down by HD-DVD is because if you have a small TV then their is no reason to upgrade because the picture is sort of the same. However if your 32 inch or up then HD-DVD makes a big difference. The only reason people went to DVD from VHS was because 1) didn't need to be rewinded 2) more durable (harder to destroy) 3) had seek functions. I however am going to make the jump to HD-DVD when the external addon comes to the xbox 360. Blu-ray is nothing, HD-DVD offers way more features like interactive layers. For the Fast and the furios 3 HD-DVD they are going to add a feature where you can design your own car on the HD-DVD player and then watch it in the movie. They are also going to let you select an actors clothing while playing a movie and have a screen pop up that gives you more details about it and even lets you buy it using the built in ethernet port. Blu-ray does not have that feature. HD-DVD also uses Mpeg 4 while blu-ray uses mpeg 2. What that means is the picture quality is better on HD-DVD and also HD-DVD can hold 3 times more video than blu-ray disc.

The only way the PS3 will be more bang for the buck is if blu ray doesn't fail and it doesn't look good for blu ray. Plus the games are the same. Nearly all games for PS3 won't be in 1080p and most gamers don't have a 1080p TV anyway. Most don't have HDMI and most don't have Wi Fi. So, what am getting for the extra $200 for the system? Why should I have to pay more for the same game just because it's on a blu ray disc? It screams rip off to me.

14 - You can choose sony its your choice, but for me MS has the better system for me.
Unregistered - 360 controllers the greatest 05.14.2006 19:01
People got it all messed up. They think that the ps3 is somehow better and you get more bang for your buck when in reality you dont. I mean think about it. Who the hell asked for blu ray, did you? I sure as hell know that i didnt. The 360 was well thought out and nicely balanced..with options galore. Now as far as the hddvd add on, thats a thing left to the consumer if you are into hd movies then its an option but youre not forced. Personally im not really into add ons if its not outta the box i can do with out it. the 360 has a progressive scan dvd built into it and if you own a 32" or bigger hi def tv, you see great quality in your regular dvd's. My thing is tho, If MS was going to make it possible to watch hd movies on the 360 why not, just make the production of the 360's from here on out equiped with a drive. But then again, who really wants to watch movies on their consoles, im not big on that but its cool that i can. 600.00 for a console its really a spit in the face of the customers. People have budgets, and living expensives, and families that they are responsible for and can find better things to do with their money than to pay damn near a thousand dollars for a 2006 beta max player. Now for the rest of us who can splurge a little bit and dont mind buying it, ask yourself why should i pay this kinda money what is the ps3 offering me that MS cant. Persnolly MS was the way to go for me. Progressive scan dvd playback outta the box, cool, hidef gaming on my hd tv, cool, 20gb custom harddrive, cool, 1st class wireless controllers with the option of turning my 360 on and off and other things right from the comfort of my couch, cool, custom soundtrack for everygame, cool, xbox live, cool i mean the list can go on and on, ugradable system, cool...i mean on a personal standpoint i really applaud ms for the overalll game experience they provide not just better graphics. When i had my ps2 i never said damn look at all the xbox games that has better graphics, the ps2 was fine i loved mine. And now i can say the same for the 360 i wouldn trade mine for anything and when it comes down to it, all hype aside the ps3 graphics will be the same as the 360's if not less. Yeah if you got games like killzone and other sony made titles you're going to get the better affects for that console but its not appealing to me at all. MS was the way for me to go. I had my 360 for 4 months or so now and never had one issue with mine, not one. The ps3 controllers are a total joke, and with no vibration they can have it. the 360 controllers are the greatest controllers ever, since dualshock 2's. I loved the dual shock 2 controller and ms captured it in so manyways, sony couldnt even do it, only in style its not going to be the same for the ps3. Ps3 to me is a gimmick and a sad attempt to restructure their fininacial out look.
MS studied and did their home work and you can see it in the system. Great system it is. Sony is doomed, and you jerks are to loyal to a brand to even see it. 360 all the way for me.

If you don't get out of here saying some crazy stuff like that! If 360 were 600 or 1000 I for one would not of purchased one just like the 3DO or a highend computer! Im a huge xbox to xbox360 fan and would never convince myself that 600 was reasonable or more like 1000.00 once you add 2 or three games a controller and warranty! Many of my friends that make decent money are still waiting for 360's price to drop so how do you figure just because were on this site that were biased about PS3! I want the thing to come out but it's too much and if you don't think so just wait and see how many people say hell no im not paying that!

Lame article. HD-DVD will beat Blu-Ray because it will have been released 2 months earlier??? Gimme a break.

It will boil down to pricing. HD-DVD has the natural edge. They need to make it a seamless upgrade...so the next time somebody is in the market, they can buy a new HD-DVD player for $149.

MS Vista + XBOX 360 + LIE ANYWHERE = THE FUTURE OF GAMEING

Play against your friends that are on a PC running MS Vista but you are on the 360 but you both have the same game is a HUGE attraction to me.

Let's talk demographics.
Say, 30 to 50 years old, male.
You say HD. They say, "High-Definition".
Good.
You say, "Blu-Ray". They say, "Baseball team?"
You say, "HD-DVD". They put it together and say, "High-Def DVD"
You try and sell a format that is unfamiliar AND more expensive to the average consumer. Not you. The average consumer. Your neighboors and fathers.
Good Luck.

WHat? hd-dvd cant hold 3 times the video as bluray. they're 30gb-50gb on different formats. its basicaly the same except HD-DVD is cheaper and the hd-dvd player can play standard dvds too.

Unregistered - Blu-ray will win. 05.15.2006 18:48
Blu-ray can play standard dvd as well, Will you idiots get it right. This guy and most of you couldnt be more wrong. I wouldnt call hd-dvd a success. They olny shipped like 10,000 players at launch. Very few stores actually carry it and it has more problems than Xbox 360. Its loud, very slow, remote doesnt work well, wont play some disc, audio doesnt work well, if you stop a movie, you have to start it all over again (no pickup point). Basically its a bigger piece of crap than the 360 and thats hard to beat. Oh and there are no other companies making players anytime soon. But, Blu-ray, thats a whole different story. go to Blu-ray.com if you want to actually learn something. Otherwise just keep telling each other lies. Losers

HP wants HD DVD features for Blu-ray; unification hopeful?

Just when you thought this couldn't get any more interesting, HP, a member of the Blu-ray Disk Association and an outspoken defender of the format, has asked the BDA to add features that are currently slated for HD DVD. This marks an interesting shift in what has been as of late a very pro-Blu-ray month.

For the sake of those who haven't been following all of this, allow me to summarize. When Microsoft announced their support for HD DVD, a major factor in their decision was HD DVD's "mandatory managed copy." HD DVD implements part of the AACS control mechanism to allow for things such as putting digital copies of a disc on a hard drive, transferring a movie (legally) to a portable player, or streaming content on a home network. Furthermore, HD DVD makes managed copy mandatory: all content provided on HD DVD must give users the option of making at least one copy. Jordi Ribas, director of technical strategy for the Windows Digital Media Division, told me that while the feature is mandatory, the studios will have the option of charging for it.

Blu-ray immediately fired back, with both Dell and HP issuing a joint statement that, among other things, repudiated Microsoft's claims regarding HD DVD's managed copy. They argued that managed copy is part of the AACS spec, and not format-specific; in other words, it wasn't decision-worthy. As I noted at the time, they failed to address the key part of Microsoft's concern: the mandatory part. That's where the rubber meets the road. I thought it was a nice dodge on their part.

This all leads us to today. HP is now asking the Blu-ray Disc Association for exactly what Microsoft is touting about HD DVD: mandatory managed copy, and something else—support for Microsoft's iHD.

HP has determined that Managed Copy and iHD will address the fundamental technical needs of the PC and help create a seamless experience throughout the digitally connected home:

Managed Copy: Unlike with today's conventional DVDs, this feature allows consumers to make legitimate copies of their HD movies and enjoy this content around the home or across their networks. Making this feature mandatory will ensure a consistent consumer experience across all next-generation DVD content.

iHD: Next-generation HD movies will provide a level of interactive experience well beyond that of today's conventional DVDs. iHD technology provides a broad foundation to enable new interactivity with standards-based development tools and technologies. It will provide consumers with enhanced content, navigation and functionality for HD films. Furthermore, Microsoft plans to implement iHD support in its Windows(R) Vista operating system, which will help ease implementation and provide a cost-effective solution for consumers.

This latter request is what makes me think we may be heading towards unification. Aside from capacity and managed copy, the other outstanding difference between Blu-ray and HD DVD is the choice of what kind of interactive development platform will be supported. Blu-ray chose to go with a Java-based solution, while HD DVD uses Microsoft's iHD.

At this point, all that's needed is a bit of sanity to come down and unite everyone. Microsoft should be happy, especially because Bill Gates recently suggested that all he wanted to see was mandatory managed copy. Have the odds on unification changed in Vegas yet? They should.
