1Up have posted an excerpt from Dean Takahashi's book The Xbox 360 Uncloaked: The Real Story Behind Microsoft's Next-Generation Video Game Console, with mention that during the early days of the Xbox, Microsoft turned down a game proposal from Rockstar Games that eventually became the Playstation 2 exclusive Grand Theft Auto 3.

xbox360rocks 05.16.2006 17:00 Everyone make sure to check out the Sony site and their "patent" for Motion Sensing technology, I did a little bit of research and found a news article for Microsoft's controller that is the same as sony's now for May of 1998. Their patent is for April of 1999. Their of their ranting about how Sony is so smart and innovative now and how Microsft and Nintendo are copying them. 6 -

It is a big dealUnregistered - dood 05.17.2006 15:18 The only reason why my sister got into console gaming was because of GTA. She owns a PS2 and all the GTA games that came out for it, thats it. I could care less of what kind of reputation they have, the GTA series was really unique compared to all other genres and got my sister into gaming. Now that M$ has opened their eyes and hopped onto a GTA4 first launch exclusive for the 360, it has become the deciding factor of what next-gen console my sister will be picking up. 20 -
#19assjacket 05.17.2006 17:02 GTA4 is not exclusive to the 360 #19, but some downloadable content will be. I am glad that Microsoft finally has equal footing with Sony in regards to this game. This is the #1 selling game(series) ever! As for the notion that Microsoft would even have GTA4 exclusively?!(next gen) They would have to pay Rockstar a very large sum of money to get that to happen. As of now Sony owns the market in Videogame consoles. For Rockstar to release their game on Sony's machine only makes sense, Waaaay more people own a PS2 than an Xbox. Waaaay more!! Signing a deal with MS only, would drastically cut Rockstars profits. After saying all that, I think that this deal is big because now the only thing that you need to buy a PS3 for is Metal Gear, but...we have Splinter Cell. Maybe GranTourismo?...we have Forza. Its going to be tough to rationalize to myself why I should pay $659CDN for Sony's macine. I said that, "as of now Sony owns the market", well I think that we are going to see a shift this generation. Wait until Vista ships, and people are start connecting their 360's to their computers more. Then more files are being shared, more games are being played online together, there's downloading movies, and eventually games. Things won't change in Japan but MS doesn't need Japan and they know that. After E3 I realized that this generation will be more of an even playing field and the game should be sweet to watch.
