Glitch In The System: Round Three Xbox 360s are still breaking; Microsoft claims rate of return is still within standard range. We look at the status of the console six months post-launch. The red rings of death. That's how the blinking red lights that surround the power button on Microsoft's Xbox 360 have come to be called, and it's the most feared sight a console owner could see. Basically, it means your console is done working for the foreseeable future.

PS3 will have this problem too but they will take care of it just like they take care the PSP battery problem. never Unregistered - dc rider 05.29.2006 07:45 cmon peeps, lets keep evrything in perspective here!!!! at least wen a 360 fails you know that something seriously is wrong with the machine, unlike ps2 whereby just getting a friggin game to load period(not even mentioning copies!!)is an acheivement in itself!!!! the way sony builds their machines is as if they intentionally want the disc lasers to knock out of line every 4 plays or so!!! at least companies like nintendo and microsoft actually have decent build quality. thats why you'll only go through 2 consoles max, whereby with sony, on average you'll go through 3 to 4 units standard!!!! why do you think sony have shipped over 100 mill ps2 units!?!?!?! cos their build quality is pants, made to break down. divide 100 mill by 3-4, and youll come to a more realistic reading as far as units shipped/sold!!!!!! btw, my xbox360 has neva once faltered!! Unregistered - Ed 05.29.2006 07:59 I bought the 2 360's that my brother and I own now at around xmas time. Having heard about the problems and everything we keep them well ventilated and never move the system when the game is loading. Living hours from each other and being Halo fans we play regularly. This week we have had our 360's for about 5 or 6 months now and we have both started seeing the "red lights of death". However after we restart the system it seems to work. However we are starting to notice a number of problems like freezing, headsets have failed major connectiopn problems. So what should we do? Unregistered - jigga 05.29.2006 09:41 If you are not lying about your xbox 360, call 18004myxbox and they should help you out!! THELANDSOFSAND 05.29.2006 09:56 god, shut up! my 360 is from december, it's covered in dust and weed resin, I leave it on all day, its kept next to my pc monitor and with 1 inch of space around it... and its perfect! PERFECT. I could throw this thing out the window, it could bounce off 2 PS3's and a Wii and still be fine. The 360 is a awesome system, sure a few people got a screwy one, but RELATIVELY, IN PERSPECTIVE, it is a VERY reliable, tough system. So yes, if your's broke, tough luck. You are an unfortunate minority- call customer service. But don't act like the whole damn system is defunct. pRo loGic II 05.29.2006 11:24 The PS3 is delayed until 2007, the decision for this came about through the failure of the initial hardware the PS3 Development Team created. Apparently, 300 PS3 Units were created and sent to various software developers to begin creating games for the new system. However, design flaws in the PS3 (Specifically, not enough coolant) caused the systems to overheat and meltdown after moderate use by the developers. According to my DM (District Manager), Sony went and fired the entirety of the PS3 Development Team for this flaw. In short, from what I've heard, if Sony gained anything from this experience, it's minor technical knowledge on what the PS3 can handle, but for the most part they were sent to square one Unregistered - shotty 05.29.2006 11:26 Well if you have a xbox 360 it works or doesn't work. It won't fall inbetween. The dvd drive is really solid it doesn't have disc errors. If the red light flashes then call MS and they will clear things up. But like IGN said the defective rate for the xbox 360 is decreasing. Even though they are making more consoles than ever the number of returns is getting smaller. THELANDSOFSAND 05.29.2006 11:36 uh, pro logic, if thats true then OMG... That has to be the end of any respect for sony from the game development community... and 2007? ! I'm actually starting to feel sorry for sony. THELANDSOFSAND 05.29.2006 11:44 okay, info, (mostly rumor): http://www.joystiq.com/2005/10/30/could-the-ps3-really-be-delayed-until-2007/ http://www.joystiq.com/2005/10/29/ps3-in-2007-bbc-hooked-lined-sinkered-on-ps3-launch-date/ Make of this what you will. I think it's a little worrying... THELANDSOFSAND 05.29.2006 11:50 wait, that is HELLA OLD NEWS. sorry. pro logic, wtf? Unregistered - MIKE 05.29.2006 12:02 ign broke ten xbox 360 {that doesnt sound like 3/5 % that sounds like 100%} i dont care how many moving parts it has are how advanced it is I JUST WANT IT TO WORK Unregistered - PL II 05.29.2006 12:14 #10-13 The point was you never know what will happen after a console's launch. I posted that mainly to limit the Sony drone's comments, but believe me PS3 will glitchs. Unregistered - yay 05.29.2006 13:47 Geez. That seems a little extreme. If you buy a launch console, buy a warranty. There have been problems with all console launches. A two year warranty is less than the price of one game. Your odds of getting a defective console are extremely small. Even so, MS (like all other console manufacturers) is working the initial kinks out. Why would you pass up on all of the great games, especially those comming out this fall? All new electronic devices have issues. The Ipod is a great example, and look how good it's doing now. Take the little inner tubes off of your arms and go swimming. I promise, there are no big bad sharks in the pool. Majunior 05.29.2006 16:41 my system freezes every so often but never shows the red ring of death.. IM beginning to think that the games that i play cause my system to frezze due to rushed launch dates...My system freezes when i screw with the guide when im on a online game usually and sometimes just when playin a game..my brother also got a 360 on launch like me and his system has seen the red ring..but microsoft is good with repairs and the shipping process..i just hope a update can fix my problem not a new system... Unregistered - .................... 05.29.2006 17:53 listen up, i feel sorry for the people who are going throught this but my reailty is that i've had my 360 since launch and never ever had a problem with it over heating, or any red rings or anything i mean no glitches what so ever. And im play it all the time i love my 360. I pray that i never do but thank GOD that i dont. f1r3waII K1LL3r 05.29.2006 19:08 Thats normal man when u mess aroung with the guide and stuff it freezes once in a blue moon I think its a glitch or something, what I like now is that if the game freeaes or something you can still press the media button and put in a new game and not reboot the system. Unregistered - shotty 05.30.2006 14:31 This happens rarely but some of the launch games freeze up and you need to restart the xbox 360. No biggie but I'm lazy. The good thing is the media remote that is bundles with the launch xbox 360 still functions even if the system freezes. So I power the xbox 360 off and then on, if you missed out on the launch mini media remotes the bigger media remote "universal" also works. I don't know about you but the xbox 360 is the only console that can be rebooted even after a freeze without even leaving the couch. If only they invent a disc swapper. Oh well atleast the demos and trailers are on demand and I can easily switch between them without getting up. Unregistered - XBOX SUCKs 05.30.2006 17:15 I think Vanilla Ice said it best. 360 ice box babby..dun dun dun, dun du dun dun... lol. icebox 360 losers Unregistered - minime 05.30.2006 20:46 does anyone really know what causes the xbox 360 to freeze is it bad dvd drive or a bad cpu heat what is causing these xboxes to freeze and get the 3 red lights of hell someone help Unregistered - fdhdhh 05.31.2006 11:37 it freezes czuse it sucks balls no one knows y they freeze thay jsut do they be suck long live poker xbox is full of glitchwes iam telling u it a dog with a catr in it hahaa call me 1347-245-7961 rich is my name and sony is my game hahaha suckas Unregistered - Mo 05.31.2006 12:38 Mine failed after 3 months, got the Red Rings of Death, and used my store warrenty to get my new one. Thank God I opted for that thing. I got the one-up on Gamestop though. I brought in the defective machine without the hard drive, and they gave me a new machine with one! The girl-clerk didn't even think about it. So i got $100 extra hard drive out of the deal. All-in-all I am up $50 on them with the cost of the new warrenty. Unregistered - speed 05.31.2006 15:42 I had three Oblivion disks turn into coasters unfortunately, Best Buy has been cool excahgning these BTW. I even tried exchanging my console once but that didn't resolve my issues. I never moved my console, and it was in a ventilated area but still, the disk drive would quiet down and then I would here a grinding noise and sure enough the disk was getting scratched to hell. On my 4th disk, I decided to try using the Nyko Intercooler to see if the issue was somehow related to heat. I've been playing now for 30+ hrs and have had no disk scratching or game freezing, and I swear it seems that load times have slighlty improved! So, either my first 3 disks had an engineering flaw or the intercooler resolved my issues. No other factors have changed. One theory is that Oblivion is so demanding of the disk drive that it causes massive heat in the console and may slightly warp the disk, just enough to throw it off balance which leads to scratching.
