John Carmack, id Software's coding genius has in a recent interview shown on G4tv made some statements regarding the PS3 Vs Xbox 360 issue. Though this is only the opinion of a high profile programmer, his opinion should be a lot more valid than the millions of forum posts on the subject. Basically he says that the PS3 is more powerful, but the 360 has better development tools and is his preferred console to develop for. "I make little nitpicky decisions about say, well, I prefer the symmetric approach that MS has over the asymmetric Cell approach, but you can do great games on either one of them, and I make fundamental decisions based on development tools and depth of documentation, which Microsoft has been superior on," he added. When speaking about the power of the hardware Carmack said that "the hardware is comparable" but went on to say that "PS3 is probably marginally more powerful, in terms of raw flops and graphic operations.” But according to Carmack having the better development tools is more important. "When you look at these development cycles that stretch over years and years, being 20% easier to develop on is much more important than being 20% more powerful", Carmack said. However, if we had asked Kojima if the PS3 development tools are inferior to those available for the 360, we would probably get a different answer. Add Comment  1 -

However, Hardocp.com, Tomshardware, Arstechnica, Anandtech (the list continues) have all stated that the GPU in the 360 is more powerful than the GPU in the PS3. Remember people, Carmack is in the Nvidia camp and will promote them whenever possible, he is not a neutral player. Nvidia endorsed Doom 3, ATi endorsed Half-Life 2. Any questions? 6 -

Vivicious 10.19.2005 12:33 Carmack is just about as neutral as they come, it's still his opinion on what is best for HIM, this doesn't mean he is in the "nvidia camp". Far from it, as he had praised ATI months ago for their GPU containing new tech like Unified Shader Architecture, saying that even though it's hard to compare to current gen video cards at the moment, he thinks it's part of the future. If anything, he prefers ATI's progress compared to Nvidia's. 9 -
JsonHenry 10.19.2005 12:34 My point is, he has chosen the 360 to be his primary source of development, alongside the PC due to its better dev kits, and doesn't want to upset Nvidia, which has been endorsing Carmack products as far back as Quake2. He would of course have to say that the platform with the Nvidia based GPU is faster. I imagine that Nvidia was more than a little upset to have their golden boy prefer to make games simultaneously with his PC games, while complaining about the PS3 being a "pain in (his) ass" to dev for. Being an OpenGL product, he may be right for his products, since the big green has always outperformed ATi in OpenGl based software. However, about 90% of all games are made in DirectX, which ATi has historically been the leader of the two. Also remember that Nvidia gets royalties for every PS3 sold, whereas ATi simply developed the Xenon, and has nothing else to do with it. XTrek 10.19.2005 12:49 These guys are all insiders. Until we get objective outsiders doing their own benchmark analysis the actual ultimate system performance comparison is unknown. The PS3 processor and the 360 processor have about the same number of transistors and use of the same silicon technology. Actually the 360 processor has more transistors! The ATI gpu is a beast and gives nothing to nvidia. None of these guys talk about how all the components in the system work together! These guys are spin doctors! The final word will be to compare fully matured games on each respective console, and that will be a couple years from now. 12 -

Because the development tools for the Xbox 360 are vastly better than the development tools available for the PS3, multi-platform games will most likely be developed for the Xbox 360 and ported to the PS3 (and possibly the Revolution). I think that what we see now in terms of who prefers to develop on what system is a little premature. We don't have a solid release date from Sony in regards to the PS3, just like we have no idea what Gears of War will be capable of. On a side note, does anyone know the specs for launch titles in terms of xbox capabilities used? For instance, CliffyB has said that GoW is currently ONLY using one cell (and it's amazing at that)...but what about PGR3? Kameo?? 18 -

I still get the feeling we are being handed a bunch of crap, no matter how "next-gen" the Xenon or the CELL happen to be. It is a bunch of crap being fed to us for the most part. If you want to have a console war, at LEAST one of the sides have to prove something by putting it in our hands. As Carmack pointed out, the PS3 will potentially be 20% more powerful and the Xbox360 will be 20% easier to develop for. This is good news as far as Xbox360 development. The shorter the time it takes to develop for Xbox360 the more time developers have to fine tune things. Regardless of who is marginally more powerful, what is truely important is the ease of development. Another thing to point out is the fact that many Xbox360 games are being produced alongside PC variations. This is very good news. Multi-system development is very attractive in regards to development costs. Combine the fact that Xbox360 architecture is similar to that of a PC and you have a lot of games to look forward to. The PC has many games you normally wouldn't find on a console. Add to the fact that Microsoft is releasing an official controller for Windows (Xbox360 core system controller) and you have games that work for both. Not to mention there is a variation of Xbox live coming out for Windows...Gamers on the PC and Xbox360 will be able to compete against one another. In one word: amazing. The bottom line is: 1)The Xbox360 is easy to develop for 2)The introduction of a standard Windows controller (the Xbox360 controller)and similar archetecture to a PC will allow developers to take advantage of multi-platform development. 3)Xbox Live on Windows will allow gamers on Xbox360 and PC to compete against one another 4)Xbox360 GPU is a beast. 5)Next generation games are going to be jaw dropping. Regardless of whether you support the Xbox360 or PS3 keep in mind that games are paramount. Each console will be superior in one way or another in terms of graphics and content. The PS3 has more flotting point calculations, ok. The Xbox 360 has more general processing power and more transitors, ok. You can do a bunch of number crunching but in the end you reach the same goal: Amazing looking games. Although I have an Xbox 360 pre-ordered I'm not a fan boy. I'm interested in games and online game play. Xbox 360 seems to have both. If the Revolution or PS3 have more of the same to offer or something different (Revolution in particular) I might have to get one of those. The gamer is the one that wins. Peace out 21 -

If your thinking about getting the ps3 or revolution, I'd wait a week after launch to see how it compares so that you can make the best choice -- not all on performance but what the best console matches what your looking for. 33 -
SillyNewbie 10.19.2005 15:49 Yea, because power cost money, the PS3 costs 575$ to make roughly, so to sell it at 400$ is a big hit, and thats the console and a controller. If you want the premium pacakge it is going to be near 500$ because sony would be bankrupt if they had to sell their premium packaging at 400$. So i believe either there will be one pacakge that is stripped for 400$ or one stripped and one premium, premium being 500$. I like the PS3 and all, but all their AAA titles are getting old and all are past the number 3... I mean times change and the 360 is a breath of fresh air. I think 360 will come out ontop in this generation. I mean Sony's PS3 may be more powerful, but power doesn't matter at this point because devs will have an impossibly hard time to use it...So since the 360 is easier to develop for, they will have better games because they have better tools to make them with. I mean this gen is all about devs, which is at a tie so far, but if these rumors that PS3 devs will jump ship are true, then 360 will come out on top for the dev section. Online 360 wins for experience, Sony has to be dedicated and i don't feel that Sony is in it for the customer feedback, they don't care enough to have a good online service. And if it is remotely good, it probably won't have frequent updates... I mean if you ask me 360 is ahead in the race - speculation but my opinion. I mean all PS3 has going for them is "more power" which considerably isn't much more power, and this generation doesn't matter on who has more power, it matters on devs, games, and online, which 360 seems to hold sony by the balls in each one...Maybe i will consider buying a PS3 if it ever reaches 250$ and has good, new games... I do like the fact that the 360 ports PC games because it saves you the trouble of having to continuosly update your PC every year. I think the games will be just about equal in terms of graphic, when they get to this level of power noticing a difference will be quite hard. I know this question is getting old but does anyone think at some point the 360, later on in its life cyle,will have problems with the amount of space its DVD can hold? No, hard drive, headset, faceplate.... you know. Hard drive will probably be around 80-100 like the 360. That's my prediction and that's probably what it's going to be. So if you ps3 boys are willing to shell out 100 more for a a tiny bit more cpu and gpu performance that you probably won't notice inless you deeply inspect it, go ahead. I for one don't buy a console just because it performs slightly stronger and has different parts that do the same function. I believe that the only unique revolutionary thing going for the ps3 that has some value is the blu-ray. But I could care less about switching DVD's -- for saving 100 bucks 36 -

Remember, Microsoft has nothing to lose. Their Xbox sales are at best disappointing. I was playin' san andreas late last night and yeah a few of the songs in that game I like alot I mean I had a few of them on cd before the game was ever made. I began to get very aggrevated with the repetition of the music and annoying disc jocky and just turned the music volumn off and turned up the stereo behind me. It was at that moment that I really realised the importance of bein able to customize your own in game soundtrack. Now you couple that with fantastic graphics, superb software support, and online gaming. You'll have a monster and just think you guys have been experiencing that for years. Now its my turn with the 360. Ps3 will be a good system dont get me wrong, but I really am looking forward to the 360 this time. The whole customized soundtrack is so important. I'm a music fanatic and that just takes gaming to another level as far as im concerned. There are other goodies with the 360 as well but I just wanted to touch on the soundtrack thing. Microsoft is brilliant in that aspect. I'm going to buy Resident E. 4 (ps2 ver) tomorrow or friday. and I would love to be able to make my own soundtrack but as it stand I can't. I still love my ps2, but I'm really really anxious to get my 360. 47 -

Just because someone knows how to program well does not necessarily mean he knows everything about processors. I had read about some of the differences between the PS3 and the Xbox360, and the main difference I noticed was the amount of Level 2 Cache. The Xbox360 is supposed to have about one Gigabyte of L2 Cache, and the PS3 will have 512 Kilobytes of L2 Cache. That would be like the difference between the Celeron processor and the Pentium III processor for a personal computer. The Pentium III was always able to outperform the Celeron because it had more L2 Cache. Microsoft was always ahead of Sony when it came to performance. The original Xbox had a 700 Mhz processor, and it was released to the public before Sony started selling the Playstation 2 with its wimpy 300 Mhz processor. The graphics on the PS2 were so bad when compared to those on the Xbox that I immediately sold my PS2 after I bought it. The Xbox 360 games will probably always cost more than the Playstation 3 games, but there is a good reason for that. The Sony products cost less to develop because Sony is inferior to Microsoft. 95 -
