Atari and Epic Games today announced that Atari has obtained the rights to use the Unreal Engine 3 and tools for games on next-generation platforms in a multiple-licensing agreement. "We've had a long-standing licensing and publishing relationship with Atari and it is especially gratifying to me to see our technology partnership continue," said Mark Rein, Vice President and Co-founder of Epic Games. "We're confident that Atari will make several great games with our technology and look forward to working with the company and its developers in achieving that goal." Yes it is a great, system and they seem to have done everything right. Except one thing, that could make the whole thing just fall apart for me. MS as we all not has opted to use standard dvd9's as its media of choice. Well, I don't know about you, but i'm looking at how are the developers going to really get the most out of allll that power that theh 360 is providing onto a itty bitty dvd disc. Sony chose to utilize the blu-ray disc, which is capable of holding a hell of alot more data. So now when a developer is making the ps3 version of a game they can and will make it top notch. J. Allard, was speaking on this very matter, and his only answer was, compression, compression, compression. I gasped, cause' when you think about it. That's the same thing they did for the GTA Sanandreas, and I mean really, it was a great game but it looked so so sh!tty. This is suppose to be the next gen in gaming. Everything else is in place for the 360. It's like having a brand new sweater, it's your size, it's new it's made out of the best materials, but there's a snag on the inside or on the back that no one's paying attention to and slowy but surely it'll start to unravel, and before you know it, you'll be looking for a new sweater. This is very troubling as I was excited about the 360. I still am excited but just knowing this is making me become less and less. FreeMonk 11.08.2005 21:04 As I have mentioned before in previous topics, a majority of the games released will be from third party developers. Developers like EA games, Ubisoft, Konami, Capcom etc etc. If these games are being released on both platforms, with no noticible graphical differences, what are people going to go for!? A console that costs $400 (and will probably be lower by the time the PS3 is launched) and the game that cost $60 or payout for a console that costs $600 (That's a rough guess for the PS3), and the game that costs $70-$80 (because the price of the blu-ray disk will be a lot more expensive than a DVD disk) I know what I'd choose. What console you will choose for your next-gen gaming will be affected by what exclusive games are available on that console, and you'll never notice any differences between each console because they'll only appear on that one console. On a personal note, the reason I'm going routing for a X-Box 360 is that MS are taking a risk and are only releasing a few sequals to there top games. The rest are brand new titles. With PS3, from all the tech demo's and previews, it seems that yet again, they will be releasing sequals. Tekken, Devil May Cry, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy whatever (I lost count), Killzone, Metal Gear Solid etc etc. Microsoft have the balls to not release there biggest game and most anticipated game, Halo 3, until next year which shows how much faith they have in there little system and the games they are releasing until then. That shows something. As for compression, that'll be no problem. Look at the X-box disks now!? Not one game needs 2 DVD's to full play the game (and don't say DOA Ultimate, they could of got away with one with loads of room to spare). All X-Box games don't even hit the 7.4gb space at the moment, and if they do, it's because they thrown on Demo's and Video's as extras. Plus, compression is getting better and better. For the person who said that compression produced crap graphics, no it doesn't. If anything compression can speed things up. If things are compressed in a neat and tidy place on the DVD, it equals to faster disk access. If files are all over the place, it equals to slower access. Anyway, if a game uses 2 disks, so what. It gets you out of your seat for that 1 minute a day exercise routine that most people have. 50 -

FreeMonk 11.08.2005 23:07 From the perspective of a person who prefers X-box to Sony, I have to say that from a sales perspective, Sony will most probably win the next-gen 'War'. Sony have to much of a hold on the market at the moment (especially in Japan), that it's going to be extremly tough for MS to break through it. I think 360 will do extremly well in the USA and Europe, because we are familar with the X-Box. As for Japan, they are going to be imbracing the 360 more, but are going to be far more cautious, even with all the fancy RPG's coming out. Remember that Sony will be releasing the PS3 in Japan 5-6 months after the X360 launch, and people in Japan could just wait out for that. As for the USA and Europe (especially Europe), I think it will do extremely well, because even before the PS3 hits the USA, we will be treated to must-play games like Gears of War, Elder Scrolls - Obvilion, Ghost Recon 3 etc etc. which even Sony fanboys won't be able to resist. It's all about timing and word of mouth. That's why I bought my original X-Box (as I was a Sony fan), when I watched my mate play Halo with no load screens, intellegent AI, fantasic graphics. Next day, I went out a bought one. Overall, I think MS target for the X360 will be to break the Japanese market and get decent sales from that region, break even on profit overall, and then invest it all again for the 3rd console, which might just see them over take Sony. No one ever thought that Nintendo could be toppled back in the late 90's, and look what's happened to them! No one thought that Sega could be toppled by Sony, but it happened. New ways of compression are being used an core or thread of the 360 that is not being used by game code can decompress the dvds as you play it. I can garentee that there wont be 20 gb of gameplay on a disk. 1. It would take the developers 3-5 years to create that much content unless the game is complete trash. 2. I t would cost a sh1t load of money to make that much content espetialy on the PS3. 3. Few people will stay interested to finish a 200 hour game unless it is one really really good game. If andy games would use that much disk space it would be because there are alot of high def. prerendered cutseens with is poinless because the hardware will alow very pretty real time cutseens as wee have already seen (MGS4 Trailer). All those cutscenes and the speech, plus those excellent graphics and light effects and all that fitted on two little 1.5gb disks, with hardly and loading screens. That's fantasic compression, and it's getting better and better. The bottom line is that all this crap about the X-Box 360 using DVD's and all the jokes about the X-360 burning down houses and all about the chips overheating just shows that the sony fanboys are indeed worrying. If they know that the PS3 is going to be this almight machine, why try and write of the X-Box 360. If they are so confident, why not just say 'X-Box 360 is good but not as good as the PS3' and leave it at that.
