Being the most important launch title for Microsoft, it must have been quite the drama in the MS camp when it became clear that Perfect Dark Zero would not make launch day…at least not the normal way. So in order to guarantee Xbox 360 launch-day availability, Microsoft sent the game to manufacture before it had passed certification. This was a huge gamble, if the game hadn’t passed certification; Microsoft would have been left with 700,000 useless copies of the game. The certification process is the final stage a game goes through before manufacture. Here the games are thoroughly tested to make sure there are no bugs, that menus all work correctly, and that there are no compatibility issues. If any bugs are discovered the games are sent back to publishers and developers for changes. The process can take days, or even weeks.
When asked about the risks involved he said, "If the certification had not passed, we would have had hundreds of thousands of disks on our hands. It was us taking a risk to get the game there day one and there for launch."
He said, "Typically you can take upwards of 12 to 14 days to go through certification. In this case we didn't have the time, so we said 'go for it'."
He said the team was confident, if not certain, that the certification would pass. "The team had been going through the game over the last few weeks to get us to a point where we felt really comfortable. Rare does a lot of work in terms of polishing the game so we felt pretty confident it was time to let it go."
Microsoft has manufactured 700,000 copies of Perfect Dark Zero for the U.S. market, with a target hardware tie-ratio of 1:1. Veevaert said that figure was based on the early launch period of the hardware, and that a further run is expected in the days ahead.] Add Comment Unregistered - GB 11.18.2005 08:24 Sneaky sneaky Unregistered - 305 11.18.2005 08:25 1 Cholo X 11.18.2005 08:30 Bad move for Microsoft RUSH JOB = BUGS AND PATCHES TO RELEASE NOT THE BEST WAY TO START DID SOMEBODY SAY GAME RECALLS? Unregistered - No name 11.18.2005 08:33 The game passed cert. They just jumped the gun in sending it to manufactor before it was finished with the cert. Unregistered - 305 11.18.2005 08:38 This was 3 days ago. Cholo X 11.18.2005 08:52 OK AMIGO, I tottally agree with you but certification is a VERY important part of everything. I work in the aviation buissness and this procces is vital to any procedure, and I know you want the best when you pay your hard earned money. Unregistered - Read again 11.18.2005 09:46 The game is certified. If it had failed, we wouldn't have it. They haven't rushed anything, they've just done things in a different order and taken a gamble. It's not as if we're getting a game that's failed the certification. Yes, it's sneaky, but no we're not getting a rushed game. Unregistered - What a pitty. 11.18.2005 10:02 MS is doing some questionable things. If this games is rushed it won't wow the people. If you don't wow the people you won't succeed period. The system is rushed. The games that they are launching are rushed ports from either current gen games or pc's. All the good games are pushed back in order to compete with sony. Sony is taking there time so by the time they release their version of some of the games there's will look, alot better and play alot better too. MS was suppose to be first out the gate to stay ahead of the competition but as of lately it's more than apparent that MS is taking two steps back for every step forward for advancement in the gaming war. Unregistered - dubb 11.18.2005 11:30 is the lack of certification the reason we haven't seen any reviews for PDZ? This is the only launch title I'm interested in and I probably won't camp or overpay for an xbox360 until I see some critical acclaim for this title. I'd love to get an xbox360, but I'm not paying out of the nose until there's a solid title out that I can't already play on my PC. Unregistered - Ms demo's controlled great, but ran rather slowly 11.18.2005 21:45 Hey I know that this is a bit off subject but, I just wanted to say I played project gothem racer today and it played well. I love the 360 controls they feel awesome. My only thing is the graphics to me didn't look anymore different than the current xbox. However, It still looks great. I've noticed tho, in a couple of demo's that the game play is kind of slow, even with the racing games. Call of duty was a blast, Kameo felt great but ran slow, Project gothem racer felt great, but was kind of slow. I'm hoping that the final cuts will be up to speed. My ps2 ran faster games. I'm hoping that MS improves on this. Unregistered - LMFAO 11.18.2005 21:54 How in the hell you going to say that ps2 runs games faster than the X360 lmfao!!! Logically speaking it is impossible. Get of Sony's NUTZ!!! Real Gamer 11.18.2005 23:14 Number 11 claims anyone who doesnt think the 360 is the greatest thing ever is a Sony fan. Wish we could ban him, he jumps on everyone whos opinion doesnt match his own. Hes the worst sort of fan and know one needs him here. I also dont want MS to rush anything, I think they have rushed the 360 and it has caused me to not only not be impressed, but canceled my preorder without a second thought or doubt. I still have hope for 360 and may get it next year, but for now, not worth it. I will probably have both PS3 and 360 but will wait and see. Ps3 has me more excited and they havent even shown much, just the fact that they arent worried and are taking their time to get it right tells me enough, and Blu-ray helps. Unregistered - merkuk 11.21.2005 03:29 just remember any1 who says they have cancelled their pro-order never had a pre-order in the first place !!! Add Comment |
