Microsoft Corp.'s new Xbox 360 videogame console comes bundled with lots of bells and whistles, such as movielike graphics. But Microsoft's bid to reshape the videogame industry largely is tied up in one feature: the machine's emphasis on online play. Microsoft is making a big -- and risky -- bet that videogame players will flock to the opportunity to play lots of games against each other over the Internet.

A Detailed Comparison Of The Xbox 360 And PS3
Submitted By: Dice
30 Dec 2005 08:44 | Xbox 360 | Playstation 3
The Xbox 360 processor, a single piece of silicon with 3 symmetric cores each with its own dedicated SIMD (vector unit) and running two hardware threads each, is only a little less powerful in terms of raw math computations than the PS3 which is expuiped with the Cell with 1 PAU (Power Architecture Unit) and 8 SPUs (Synergistic Processing Units, a marketing label that I hate.) What I haven’t heard with authority yet is if that is with or without one of the eight SPUs that is reserved and unavailable for developers to use.

The European Developers Relations Manager for ATI, Richard Huddy, was quoted in an interview with Edge magazine saying that "I think Xbox 360 technology is likely to outperform PlayStation 3 technology by a pretty healthy margin in the long run." and that the RSX was basically a PC part component slapped into the Playstation 3 at the last moment of the Playstation 3's development process.

Well it seems that Microsoft may of messed up a little with trying to get the demo stations out early. It looks like that the Demo disk for the kiosks did not have the media protection on the disk, so when the disk is copied, it boots perfectly on a retail 360. This means that it could be another Dreamcast Boot Disk for the 360 issue here! Click the link to read more!

Xbox 360 costs $715 to make
Submitted By: HyperBear
29 Dec 2005 07:19 | Systems | Xbox 360
Earlier numbers by Business Week may have reported that Microsoft is losing $126 on every Xbox 360 sold. That figure is now believed to be a bit higher by some. According to Insider Scoop, the world's largest software maker is losing upwards of $300 per console sold. From the article: "A high ranking friend at IBM, one that worked on the Xbox 360 chip design, tipped us regarding the real expenses involved in manufacturing the Xbox 360... 'It costs Microsoft approximately $715 to make, the manufacturing costs are still too high, another reason why they’re producing relatively small quantities.'”
If anyone has the money to blow, it's Billsoft. And if true, how long can the company stay in the red?

Nintendo up, but Microsoft down in Japan
Submitted By: HyperBear
24 Dec 2005 10:16 | Systems | Xbox 360 | Playstation 3 | Revolution
Demand for the Xbox 360 has grown in the West as the Christmas-holiday shopping season enters its final leg, but the same can't be said for MS's new console darling in Japan.
For the week of December 12-18, the Xbox 360 only sold 8,623 hardware units (capturing a mere 1.39% of the Japanese market), a huge drop-off from even the relatively better first-week sales of 43,970 during launch. Having Animal Crossing, Mario Kart, Final Fantasy IV, and more Pokemon and brain-training games for Nintendo's portable systems probably didn't help any.
Now you can trust a site called Cubed3.com to highlight the 360's sales shortfalls in the home of the DS, GBA, and PS2, but only a 0.03% share for the original Xbox? That has got to hurt the ego.

Wrestle Kingdom Pulled From Shelves
Submitted By: News Bot
23 Dec 2005 10:01 | Xbox 360
MS just can't catch a break in Japan. After all the various software delays, they'd finally gotten a good post-launch title providing what Japanese gamers want. That title is Wrestle Kingdom--Japan has a very decent-sized wrestling fanbase--and it was supposed to have shown up in stores today triggering some higher sales for the system. But on the eve of the game's release, the developer Yukes discovered that the game had trouble detecting the amount of free space on a hard drive and wouldn't let players save their games. Rather than staying quiet and patching the game at a later time, they quickly informed game stores and asked them to send back their copies. The game's release is cancelled for now--Yukes also offered exchanges for those who had gotten early copies.
