Microsoft Countersues Lucent
Submitted By: pRo loGic II
18 May 2006 07:11 | Xbox 360 | Technology | Industry News
Back in April, Lucent filed a law suit accusing Microsoft of infringing upon video decoding technologies with Xbox 360. A similar suit was brought against Dell and Gateway in 2003, but Microsoft came to their aid by filing a declaratory judgment complaint, resulting in the case being thrown out based on patent typographical errors. When Lucent refilled the patents, however, it gave them ammunition for Microsoft. Today, though, Microsoft decided it would fire back at Lucent with a countersuit with a taste of their own medicine, alleging the company has violated a number of Microsoft's own patents. The countersuit also says the two supposed infringing patents are not valid.

Ulanoff: Blu-ray Is Doomed to Lose DVD Format War

Blu-ray is doomed.
I came to this conclusion shortly after reading John Dvorak's thoughtful dissection of the HD DVD versus Blu-ray imbroglio.
It was right on the money in all ways but one: Dvorak didn't anoint a winner; he thinks it'll take a couple of years to shake out.
I think he's wrong.

XBOX 360 HACKED?
Submitted By: peterjsousa
16 Mar 2006 04:14 | Systems | Xbox 360 | Events | Technology | Industry News
Word is out on the street that a flaw in the Xbox 360 DVD firmware may allow a hacker to install his own custom firmware in there unchecked, and as such gain full control of what the DVD will or will not accept. In practice, this would mean that the drive could gain the capability to boot backups of original game DVD’s by flashing a self-built firmware in there which ignores the mandatory disc signing.

Why Microsoft picked HD-DVD
Submitted By: Lost Alley
03 Mar 2006 08:14 | Xbox 360 | Technology
Microsoft has outlined prohibitive pricing, faltering industry support and technical troubles as the reasons behind why it has turned its back on the Blu-ray next-generation DVD format for the upcoming external Xbox 360 drive. Microsoft has long associated itself with the rival HD-DVD format but few reasons have been given why. But now Microsoft PR employee Cesar Menendez has reported on his Gamerscore Blog that the MS big cheeses were reacting to a number of worries about Blu-ray.

Is it a gaming tablet, a new multimedia device, a portable PC, a DVD player... or what? Whatever, it's not a handheld Xbox apparently In fact, if the latest informed speculation surrounding Origami is to be believed, the device is being pitched as a kind of cut-price tablet-style PC, offering a light and portable package for XP users who can't be arsed to lug around a proper laptop when they're on the go. Check out those 'go anywhere' lifestyle images on the site and the slightly cringeworthy concept movie and that would seem to fit the profile.

HD DVD VS Blu-Ray

21 Feb 2006 12:23 | Xbox 360 | Playstation 3 | Technology | Industry News
The battle lines are drawn, and the war is about to begin between HD-DVD and Blu-Ray, the two next-generation mediums for our entertainment future. There are fans on both sides, pledging their allegiance and trust in one or the other brand, while there are others who are standing by to see what the end result of each is in terms of actual quality and price. The fact of the matter is that while each camp is putting out info to hype their medium as much as possible, the final decision will come down to the consumer, because even if one is better than the other, the one that sells more, will ultimately win.

Study Claims Playing Video Games Improves The Brain
Submitted By: Trickedbullet
13 Feb 2006 06:02 | Technology
In contrast to all the so-called studies claiming playing games with violent content will inspire real violent, this article on the Globe and Mail web site states that a York University study shows that playing games might actually improve brain activity. Here is a snip:
A new study of 100 university undergraduates in Toronto has found that video gamers consistently outperform their non-playing peers in a series of tricky mental tests. If they also happened to be bilingual, they were unbeatable.
"The people who were video game players were better and faster performers," said psychologist Ellen Bialystok, a research professor at York University. "Those who were bilingual and video game addicts scored best -- particularly at the most difficult tasks."
Thanks to Evil Avatar for the heads-up.
I just thought such news would tickle every ones fancy. News like this just makes me proud to be a gamer! ;)

Rumors have been all over the web about TEAM ICE and their supposed mod chip solution for the Xbox 360 console. After some digging however, it appears that not only are they far off from a solution but not a real team at all. Composed entirely of Evan O'Keefe (aka SkyD) it seems a rather elaborate net of lies has been put in place with intentions ranging from misleading large scale mod chip distributers to minor scamming on Ebay.
